Mathematicians Who Work in Industry
Dr. Keith Wojciechowski*
Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science, UW-Stout
Mathematics students are often asked whether they are going into teaching or the actuarial sciences.
While those professions provide excellent career opportunities they are not the only ones. Corporations
recognize that the math major provides excellent experience in critical thinking skills. Mathematicians
are valued for their adaptability when faced with unfamiliar and ill-posed problems.
According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics the job outlook for mathematicians is for 23% growth
through 2022 with a median pay of $101,360. Industry mathematicians use advanced mathematics
to understand underlying principles of a problem, analyze data, and model systems for predictive
analysis. For example, four industries that hire mathematicians in large numbers include aerospace /
aeronautics, cryptology, industrial operations research, and quantitative finance.
In this talk Dr. Wojciechowski, who was recently employed as an industry mathematician, will share
his knowledge and experiences and offer advice for pursuing a career in industry. Students will learn
about courses to consider and companies that hire mathematicians. We will also discuss the advantages
to getting a PhD. (For example, did you know that math PhD programs are tuition free and students
get paid to be TAs and RAs?!)
