In 1998, SMA further expanded it scope by joining forces with the Association of Mezzanine Manufacturers. Consider Building Codes As a group of manufacturers, SMA has a voice with organizations that write building codes that do effect our products. Individual companies do not have the same voice that a collective group has, nor does it have the necessary resources to influence groups like International Code Council, NFPA and others. Consider Research SMA’s mission includes the development and advancement of standards and activities to advance the quality, safety and general fitness for intended use of Storage Equipment. Members combine assets to fund independent studies that will benefit all members such as concrete slab analysis or industrial grade steel shelving specifications. Having access to this information gives manufacturers the knowledge that they are on the same playing field as other manufacturers within their industry. Consider Standards Consider Education SMA works together as a group to develop design and safety standards for its industry. End users want to be assured that the products they purchase and use in their business’ are manufactured to a set of standards that lets them know the product will last and more importantly perform. As a member of SMA you will be part of the process and can plan in advance for changes that are recommended for future standards. It is always better to know about changes ahead of time as opposed to reacting to changes at the last minute. Being a part of MHI provides an open highway to other associations and organizations, both domestically and internationally. MHI invites guest speakers to attend its meetings to talk about issues that are relative to our industry. MHI also conducts many independent training classes and material handling industry related sessions for its members throughout the year. Consider Statistics Domestic sales statistics are collected anonymously through MHI and distributed to the SMA members. This confidential information is a good indication of market size and direction and is not available anywhere else. Consider Networking The Annual and Spring Membership Meetings provide an excellent opportunity to meet with peers at companies in related and unrelated industries. You also have access to members of the material handling media and educational institutions that have material handling programs and resources. Consider Advertising Member of MHI and SMA are included on the MHI website, mhi.org. This website is a vast collection of information that is continually updated and accessed globally. The use of the Internet is ever increasing and you never know what link potential customers will use to find information about your product and company. Consider Leads MHI has a library of documents related to our industries available to the general public. When anyone requests a document his or her name is recorded and periodically distributed to members. Members can decide if they wish to follow-up with additional information. MHI is often contacted for names of companies that can provide products and services like the ones manufactured by SMA members. Consider Market Awareness SMA works within MHI to promote our industry. SMA continually spreads the news about storage solutions and the companies that can provide them, their members of course!
