Summer 2016 NEWSLETTER Once again the Curriculum Committee has organized a series of lectures/discussions for a few opportunities this summer. Most of our offerings require membership in Learning in Retirement, although there are a few opportunities for non-members to participate as well. You do need to register in advance for all of the classes and you are encouraged to do so soon, as many fill quickly! Loneliness, Social Support and Cognitive Aging The Spirit of the Music in Winona Ellen Rozek, Ph.D., UWL Assistant Professor of Psychology The purpose of the class is to give people a broader understanding of the impact loneliness and social support can have on cognitive health. Research has found that social support and loneliness in a person’s life can have measurable impacts on changes in cognition. This class will review the research findings from the field and discuss them, highlighting a recent study conducted on campus with members of the UWL student body and community members, including members of LIR. Conversation, companionship and communication – these are the key words in their universe. Petri is considered one of the world’s most supreme instrumentalists, while Hannibal’s wide experience from various ensembles enables him to create both harmony and contrast; together they form a synthesis that attracts attention worldwide. July 14, 2016 LIR members = $70 Non-LIR members - $110 Assisted Death Shakespeare and Polish History Erica Srinivasan, Assistant Professor Psychology Assisted death is a topic that has been met with much public interest and controversy, which makes it an important topic to discuss and understand. In this course, learn about assisted death laws around the world, with a focus on the assisted death movement in the U.S. Examine the assisted death law in Oregon, the first place in the U.S. where assisted death became legal, including the demographics of people who have used the law, the motivations for seeking assisted death, and arguments for and against assisted death. Srinivasan will present research findings from her qualitative study on grief and bereavement following an assisted death. Implications for those grieving an assisted death will be discussed. June 24, 2016; 1–3 p.m. LIR members - $5 Spend a delightful day in Winona, beginning the day at the Polish Museum to learn about Winona’s Polish (Kashubian) heritage and see some lovely folk art. Lunch will be at the Jefferson Pub. After lunch see one of Shakespeare’s most delightful comedies As You Like It. The Great River Shakespeare Festival is known for making Shakespeare an accessible pleasure. A presentation on the play will take place in La Crosse a week or so before visit. This was a way to recognize the importance of cultivating the great store of accumulated knowledge among our community of older adults and providing opportunities for continued educational growth. We want to share our stories but would invite you to also share yours! What a better way to begin, “renewing our learning community” right on the Mississippi River with a cruise on the La Crosse Queen paddlewheeler. The conference will offer a variety of peer-lead breakouts for officers as well as relevant topics offered to members at large. There will be some “downtime” activities which will give you the opportunity to enjoy beautiful city.
