Meeting Minutes for September 18, 2003 College Committee of the College of Science and Allied Health University of Wisconsin-La Crosse The meeting began at approximately 3:20 PM. Present: Michael Nelson, Rafique Ahmed, Marc Rott, Robert McGaff, Rebecca LeDocq, Michael Jackson, Andrew Matchett Absent/excused: Adrienne Loh, Robin Tyser, Daniel Sutherland Dean Nelson expressed his desire that Committee minutes be distributed to all faculty in the College. Dean Nelson distributed documents including a list of Committee members for 2003-2004, a letter from UW System President Katherine Lyall indicating acceptance of the UW-L proposal to use service-based pricing for the new dosimetry certificate program, the Committee’s Articles of Organization, LAX forms for a new SAH course (“Changing the Culture, Women in Science”) and a letter from Bruce Riley, chair of Mathematics, including information regarding a new Mathematics course (“Mathematics for Elementary Teachers II”). Rebecca LeDocq was nominated and unanimously elected chair of the committee. Robert McGaff was appointed Secretary. Dean Nelson briefly discussed the idea of formally recognizing SAH faculty through an awards program for special achievement in instruction, scholarship, service, and advising. Documents describing a similar program within the college of Liberal Studies were distributed to the committee. Dean Nelson gave a brief overview of the main issues he is currently working on that could be taken up by the Committee. These issues are: university re-organization, recruitment of students of color and out-of-state students, possible further budget cuts and their implications, and progress in generating bylaws for the new Department of Health Professions. The Committee briefly discussed issues regarding tuition dollars generated by out-of-state students, summer school, the oversight and review of courses carrying the SAH designation (socalled “umbrella” courses), and courses with the CMP (computational science) designation. Dean Nelson distributed a document describing the Institute of Biomolecular Sciences. The Committee will meet next on Thursday, September 25 at 3:20 PM.
