1. THE CHANCELLOR’S EXCELLENCE in STUDENT RESEARCH AWARDS
Eight undergraduate students conducting research and currently enrolled for the entire academic
year (2001/2002) will be selected to represent UWSP at the National Conference for Undergraduate
Research (NCUR) and the UW Systemwide student research conference in 2002. Two students will be
selected from each College. Awards up to $1,000 in travel funds will be granted to attend those
conferences.
Two students from each college will be selected for the $1,000 Chancellor’s Excellence in Student
Research Awards. There is a two-fold selection process:
Preliminary Selection: Deans of each college will nominate four students (there will be a prescreening
by each college, so please contact your college dean for each college’s specific selection process).
Students nominated will submit their applications to their Dean. Deans will submit these to the Grant
Support Service Office, 204 Main by noon on Monday, October 1, 2001 (please use the attached
forms)
Final Selection: Nominated students will be required to participate in the 1st UW-SP Celebration of
Undergraduate Research and Creativity in the Alumni Room, University Center on Friday, October
19, 2001 from 2:00 – 5:00 pm. The participation may include: poster presentations, performances,
proposal presentations and exhibitions. During that Celebration, the Student Research Fund
Committee (SRF) will evaluate and rank the participants, and then select those individuals to receive
the Chancellor’s travel grants.
Benefits:

All Participants nominated by their respective college dean will receive a certificate of
recognition.

The selected eight students (representing the four colleges) will receive up to $1,000 in
travel expense funds to attend:



The National Conference for Undergraduate Research meeting (April 25 – 27, 2002
at University of Wisconsin--Whitewater).
The UW-System Conference of Undergraduate Research (usually held in May)
representing UWSP.
Participants will be electronically published in UW-SP’s Journal of Student
Scholarship.
Preliminary Selection Process
Sixteen students will be considered for the Chancellor’s Excellence in Student Research Awards. This
application is part of that consideration. You will submit this application to your college dean. If your
dean recommends you (deans are able to recommend only four students per college), you will be
representing your college in the 1st UW-SP Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creativity
scheduled for Friday, October 19th from 2:00 – 5:00 in the Alumni Room, UC. Eight undergraduate
students (from the 16 participants at that celebration) will be selected to represent UWSP at the
National Conference for Undergraduate Research and the UW-SP Systemwide conference. Two
students will be selected from each College. Awards up to $1,000 in travel funds will be granted to
attend these conferences.
Application Guidelines:
(1) follow the format and guidelines —TYPE!
(2) make sure your abstract is understandable to an intelligent layperson from any discipline
(3) obtain the endorsement of the faculty mentor
(4) submit application to your college Dean by September 27, 2001
Don't be afraid to ask your faculty mentor for help in preparing this application. It should be
your proposal prepared with the advice and guidance of a faculty member.

Undergraduate students enrolled for the entire academic year 2001/2002 are eligible.

MENTOR TRAVEL PROGRAM
for the Chancellor’s Excellence in Student Research Awards
One faculty, staff or administrative mentor from each college will be provided up to $1,000 in travel
money to attend both the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) and the UWSystem-wide student research conference. Each mentor will be chosen by the Dean of their college
and will aid students involved in the Chancellor’s Excellence in Student Research Awards for the
current year and be an advocate for student research for the following year. Selection of mentors
will be announced at the end of October 2001.
