TheICA‐ISPRS2011JointWorkshopsbroughttogetherleadingresearchersto addressissuesrelatedtothecomplexityofdynamicgeographicalandenvironmental systemsfromtwoperspectives,firstthegeospatialanalysisandmodelingone,andsecond theweb‐basedmapping,geoprocessingandservicesone.Inmorethanthreedecades, geomaticsengineering,geographicinformationandcomplexityscienceshaveemergedas paradigmstoeffectivelyanalyzethelinkagesbetweensocialandnaturalsystemsasthey evolveintimeandacrossgeographicspace.However,manyunresolvedconceptual, technicalandapplicationchallengesstillremain.Consequently,theWorkshops'theme "Ourcomplexworld:representation,analysisandmodeling"focusedonthesechallengesto clarifyexistingunderstandingandadvancenewknowledge. OneofthegoalsofthejointWorkshopswastocontinuetofacilitateandpromote high‐qualityresearchinteraction,networkingandcommunications.Theintentionwasthat multipledisciplinesincludinggeography,geomaticsengineering,andcomputer,statistical andmathematicalscienceswouldintegrateideastowardsanimprovedunderstandingof theinteractionsbetweensocialandnaturalsystems,andconsequentlymoreeffective spatialandenvironmentalplanning,policyanddecisionmakingforabetterworld.These themeswerereinforcedbyDr.MargueriteMadden,ISPRSTechnicalCommissionPresident inheropeningremarkstotheworkshopsparticipants.
