First-Year Outdoor Adventure Programs

students, regardless of major, to make a positive transition into college
life. Make new friends, increase your confidence and self-esteem,

gain social skills and learn about college life from current students.
Connections you make with university staff and fellow first-year students

experience at CWES on the shores
of beautiful Sunset Lake.
Goals
The Lead the Pack Program uses the natural environment as a setting
for individual growth, where students direct their focus toward their social
and academic futures. Students gain a set of shared experiences to better
prepare them for their transition to college. Through engagement with the
outdoors, students develop a sense of self and enhance their peer
relationships at the Central Wisconsin Environmental Station (CWES),
a UW-Stevens Point field station.
On their course evaluation, 99% of former participants said they would
recommend Lead the Pack to incoming first-year students.
Academic Credit
Lead the Pack includes a 1 credit course (NRES 120: Orientation to Campus
Life) that fulfills your GEP Foundational Wellness requirement. To be eligible
for the course, you must complete the three-day adventure program in August.
As part of NRES 120, we will meet for six evening sessions scheduled for
the first six Thursdays of the fall semester, September 3 - October 8. Topics
covered will include the Seven Dimensions of Wellness, student involvement,
residential life, student support resources and recreation. Be sure to plan this
into your schedule when you register for fall classes.

Pathways to Point
Goals
The Pathways to Point Program is based on the six dimensions of wellness.
The Wellness Model suggests people are more than physical beings; they are
holistic beings and the different dimensions of our lives must be attended to in
order to achieve high quality of life. The six dimensions of wellness include
spiritual, physical, intellectual, career, emotional and social.
Academic Credit
This experiential course is available for academic credit. To be eligible for the
credit, you must complete the summer trip and attend the Wilderness Orientation
course in the fall semester (course number will be announced soon). The
course will expand on what you learned on the trip as well as introduce you to
campus resources. Be sure to plan this into your schedule when you register for
fall classes.
Cost
Each trip costs $400. This fee includes equipment, transportation, meals and
instruction. Once accepted, your non-refundable deposit of $200 will secure
your place. The remaining $200 must be paid at summer orientation or before
your trip is scheduled to leave.
Trips
Each trip is led by a qualified and experienced UW-Stevens Point staff
member and student. Both leaders are certified in CPR, First Aid and
Wilderness First Aid.

Six-day, five-night wilderness adventure trips.
Canoeing and backpacking in Wisconsin,
Michigan and Minnesota.
Porcupine Mountains Wilderness Backpacking, August 2-7, 2015
Explore one of the Midwest’s largest areas of undeveloped wilderness
along the spectacular shores of Lake Superior. Join us and experience
the picturesque overlooks, pristine lakes, wild rivers and cascading
waterfalls as we travel through the backcountry of the Porcupine Mountain
Wilderness. You will be challenged by the rugged trails that climb from
600 to 1,958 feet above sea level at the top of Summit Peak. At the end
of the journey you will have traveled more than 30 miles of this
60,000-acre tract of wilderness.
Sylvania Wilderness Canoeing and Fishing, August 2-7, 2015
Get ready to paddle, fish and portage the pristine lakes of the Sylvania
Wilderness Area surrounded by old growth hemlock and pine. Fishing for
bass, in particular, is exceptional within this segment of the Ottawa National
Forest in Michigan’s scenic Upper Peninsula. Under primarily catch and release
regulations, the opportunity exists to catch a smallmouth in the 20”, 5 lb. class,
as well as Largemouth, Northern Pike and Lake Trout. We may be able to make
a tasty shore lunch of panfish!
Namekagon/St. Croix Canoeing
Trip 1: August 9-14, 2015
Trip 2: August 16-21, 2015
Canoe Wisconsin’s only National Scenic Riverway on the Namekagon and
St. Croix Rivers. Float through some of the most beautiful backcountry areas
in the state and learn “Leave No Trace” camping techniques. Experience the
abundant wildlife of the Namekagon River and the beautiful bluffs of the St. Croix
River, with plenty of time each day for swimming, fishing or just hanging out.
This trip is suitable for novice canoers, yet challenging enough to be fun for all.
Superior Hiking Trail Backpacking, August 9-14, 2015
Put on your hiking boots and prepare to backpack on the scenic Superior
Hiking Trail that runs parallel to Lake Superior. Located in northeast Minnesota,
the trail passes through rugged forests and hills, spanning elevations from 600
to 1,750 feet above sea level. You will pass rock outcroppings, view vistas of
Lake Superior, witness surging waterfalls and enjoy the wonders of the
northwoods wilderness. If you are lucky, you will even see one of Minnesota’s
legendary moose along the way. This experience will change your body
physically as well as stimulate your senses with its scenery.

Pictured Rocks Backpacking, August 16-21, 2015
Spend a relaxing week taking in the beauty of Lake Superior and the bluffs
for which Pictured Rocks of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is famous. We
will hike an average of six to seven miles per day on the Lakeshore Trail,
for a total of more than 30 miles, while camping along the shore of the
lake. Here we can watch the sunset over Lake Superior and let the sounds
of the waves lull us to sleep. Waterfalls, sandstone bluffs, beaches and a
plethora of wildlife may be encountered.
