How do you change lhe world ? This question has
been strongly characteristic of the youth of the
1960's and iO's. The civil rights movement. the antiwar movem ent. protests against poverty and
business domination or the u.s. all reflect the
cdealism of the young, their desire for a good world
a nd decent life for a ll its citizens. Yet this idealism
has of late been perverted and destroyed. The young
have no means or realizing their idealism . They
want to change the world but there is no way of doing
so : they are denied the means to significant ac tion .
For exa mple. under the Kennedy and Johnson administrations there was a great appea l to the
ide'a lism of the young , manifested in such programs
as the Peace Corps a nd the war on Poverty . Yet
these programs had a basic flaw : they were never
allowed from the beginni ng to be instruments or
sign ificant change. The participants were somehow
to change the world through mere idealistic sentiment : they were not provided with adequate tools,
money. and materials . The basic philosophy behind
the Peace Corps and other War on Poverty
programs was that the problems were individual
a nd all that was required was to somehow cha nge
U1c individual. That the problems were rooted in
somelhing larger than the individual , that they were
rooted in the very structure of society. was not
considered . The Peace Corps workers were not
allowed to question the basic structure and sa nity of
the society in which they worked, despite its bearing
on the quality of the average person 's life. Nor were
they to question the nature of American intervention
in a society or the effect of American business
dominance . The land frauds and s lave labor which
characterizes the activities of U.S. f~nd)oil
companies in Laten America was to have no' relation
to poverty of the common citizen in Latin American
socie(v . The Peace Cor.os mav have made life better
for people in a few isolated places , but in the end it
has been a total failure. It has failed to change the
world in any meaningful way and was never
intended to do so.

The university . contrary to its definition, "a n

Where the primary goal was once to create scholars.
the American university boasts athletic prowess and

By replacing an intense atmosphere of study with
hedonism. lhe university has failed both the student
and society . While business interests provide a well
of financial resources , administ r ators pump
millions of dollars into facilities which fail to serve
educational ends.
In the American universities, critica l analysis of
social problems is scorned. Those professors who
exhibit an interest in creating scholars of their
pupils are often times removed under lhe tenents of
a tenure policy flexible enough to negate critical
thought.
Students themselves are partially to blame for the
fa il ings of our universities . Their acce ptance of

Till' failure of the ,\m erica n unh•ersiti es is their

M'r ious students. The university is sacred ground
a nd to tai nt it wi th the calculating en terprise of

•
We are left wonderi ng when Americans will begin
to see the great disservice their universities have
done them . Weare left dis hearte ned by the violation
of human rights and human dignity which surrounds
us . I[..we accept the fact that the s treng th of a na tion
1s in its yo uth , then we mus t also accept an inhe r ent
weakness in th e years ahead . The American sys tem
of higher education is no longer interested in
prod ucing individua ls with a respect of the
huma nita rian views of Jefferson , but in manufacturing robots to se rve in the perversion of
democratic ideals .
The America n uni versity has los t its sense of
d irection . While each year counUess s tudents are
ma nufactured for business and professional careers
by schools of higher learning. the numbe r of
scholars is kept in check . A serious look at
univers ity sys tems , policies and practices reveals
some dis tu r bing aspects a bout America n highe r
education .
