Director, Department of Intercollegiate Athletics

Summary:
The Director of Athletics creates a vision and provides leadership for the department of Intercollegiate
Athletics at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. The Director of Athletics directly supervises
coaches, athletic administration and support services personnel, volunteers, and student employees.
The Director of Athletics reports directly to the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs with indirect
reporting to the Chancellor.
A. Administrative
A.1. Provides leadership and administrative direction for 20 intercollegiate sports with over
500 student athletics
A.2. Creates and implements the Intercollegiate Athletic Program’s strategic plan
A.3. Develops and implements processes and policies to enhance department resources;
responsible for enforcement of these processes and policies
A.4. Provides oversight of compliance with NCAA, NCHA, and WIAC rules, and state and
federal laws working in conjunction with the WIAC Office and Commissioner. Represent
the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Athletics in NCAA, NCHA, and WIAC trainings
and meetings.
A.5. Works in conjunction with university departments to oversee the university’s athletic
facilities and long-range facility planning
A.6. Works with University Relations and Communications, and the Sports Information
Director to market and promote the Intercollegiate Athletic Program
A.7. Works with Admissions in recruitment and retention of student athletes
A.8. Collaborates with academic support services to support the social, physical, emotional,
and intellectual development of student athletes
A.9. Serves as a member on the Chancellor’s Cabinet
A.10. Coordinates games management and athletic eligibility
A.11. Serves as the departmental liaison to the UWSP Athletics Committee
A.12. Responsible for compliance with NCAA Title IX and submittal of the NCAA Title IX annual
report
B. Fiscal Responsibility
B.1. Advances and executes fundraising, corporate sponsorship, promotions, and marketing
activities working collaboratively with the University Advancement Office and the
Director of Development for Student Affairs and Athletics
B.2. Development and management of, and compliance with, budget policies and
procedures that includes revenues from state allocations, segregated and student fees,
generated revenues, and donations. Includes:
 development, coordination and management of Athletics budgets
 preparation and presentation of budget requests to the Segregated University Fee
Allocation Committee
 working closely with coaches and booster groups on fundraising, and approval of
booster and fundraising expenditures
 coordination of overall camp program revenue and expenditures
B.3. Monitors budget allocations, revenues, expenditures, fund balances and related
financial activities across all accounts and fund sources to ensure continued budgetary
accountability, transparency, and fiscal responsibility within the entire Athletic
Department.
C. Personnel Management
C.1. Recruits, hires, and evaluates coaches and administrative and support staff, volunteers
and student employees
C.2. Collaborates with related athletics support services, i.e., Athletic Training, Sports
Information, and Strength and Conditioning, and Facilities
C.3. Encourages and creates an atmosphere of sportsmanship, professionalism, and respect
among staff, coaches, and student athletes within the program
C.4. Provides leadership in meeting the department’s commitment to affirmative action
objectives, including gender equity in athletics
C.5. Supervises the development of department policies and assumes responsibility for
enforcement of these policies
D. Academic Eligibility
D.1. Monitors academic progress of all 20 teams
D.2. Ensures all athletes are academically eligible and compliant
D.3. Coordinates the compilation of GPAs for teams and athletes for conference awards and
internal records
E. Community Responsibility
E.1. Coordinates public relations with internal and external constituencies; promotes event
attendance with internal and external constituencies
E.2. Attends WIAC and NCAA Athletic Directors meetings
E.3. Acts as a spokesperson for the athletic department to university administration and the
community in general
Perform other duties and responsibilities assigned by the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs.
Required Qualifications:
 Master’s degree from an accredited university
 Minimum 5 years demonstrated professional work experience in athletics
 Demonstrated experience with:
o games management
o financial management; budgets
o personnel administration
o community relations
Preferred Qualifications:
 Master’s degree in a related field from an accredited university
 Experience in Athletics Administration at a university level
 Demonstrated experience in fundraising
 Demonstrated strong commitment to athletes as students
 Demonstrated experience supporting students from diverse and multicultural backgrounds
 Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and engaging public presence that invites
partnerships and engagement across campus and in the community
