CENTRAL WISCONSIN ENVIRONMENTAL STATION HEALTH CARE COUNSELOR – SUMMER 2016 The Central Wisconsin Environmental Station offers summer camp experiences for kids. Traditional 6 day overnight camps, adventure trips, and day camps are all part of the summer camp experience. General Description: The Health Care Counselor is the primary care provider for our summer campers. This position is responsible for providing individualized care and attention for campers, including dispensing and documenting all medication campers require. The Health Care Counselor is required to live on-site from Sunday at 1:00 pm to Friday at 5:00 pm in the Health Lodge, which contains a private living space. This position will be given an average of 3 hours off daily Monday - Thursday except in the event of an off-site trip or campout. During this off time the Health Care Counselor will be able to leave the site to run errands or stick around to wash laundry, kayak, hike, etc. The Health Care Counselor will be required to be at each evening program/campfire along with all other counselors. Camp involves hard work and long hours, but the memories, lessons, and laughter will last a lifetime. Qualifications: Flexible and positive attitude. Ability to stay organized in a variety of camp and wilderness settings. • Desire, commitment, and ability to work with kids and people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities • Training or experience in care giving and first aid • Past experience working with children and in a camp setting is preferred but not required • First Responder, Wilderness First Responder or Responding to Emergencies certification required or willing to obtain before camp begins (CWES will cover the cost of First Responder or Responding to Emergencies only) • Lifeguard certification is required or willing to obtain before camp begins (CWES will reimburse the full cost of certification or recertification at end of summer) • Wisconsin Boater Safety certification (CWES will reimburse the cost at the end of summer) • Employees must be at least 18 years of age • Employees must successfully pass a background check • Valid drivers license is required Duties of Health Care Counselor: Health Care Responsibilities: • Ensure that all staff and campers have a safe and positive experience during their stay • Report directly to the Summer Camp Director • Communicate clearly and effectively with campers, parents, Summer Camp Director, and other staff • Oversee the operation of the Health Lodge by preparing for upcoming camps, conducting a weekly inventory of medical supplies and medications, making copies of camper health and history forms, preparing medical needs/kits for all off site adventure and overnight camping trips, and other duties as assigned • Provide a list of medical supplies that need to be ordered two weeks before running out to Summer Camp Director • Prepare all camper registration check in forms one week before each camp begins • Perform health checks upon camper arrival each week • Dispense and record medications daily • • • • Provide first aid for injuries and illnesses Assist with training staff in first aid and health care procedures during staff training and at certain staff meetings during the summer Remain flexible to scheduling changes as necessary Work with state personnel during annual health code check Waterfront Responsibilities: • Lead in supervision of the waterfront and waterfront safety procedures • Make campers aware of waterfront rules and policies and enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures. • Perform camper swim checks • Maintain waterfront first aid kit CWES Team: • Work cooperatively with summer program staff members and permanent staff to help build a cohesive team and to ensure all campers’ needs are met • Fill in for other program positions if needed (example: substitute for sick staff). This may include leading recreational and educational activities and camping overnight with campers and staff at a primitive camping area • Abide by CWES Code of Conduct, Employment Agreement, and UWSP/CWES rules outlined in staff manual • Work in other departments on site – including maintenance, food service, and the camp garden– as needed • Maintain a positive and respectful attitude towards staff and campers • Other duties and projects as assigned Compensation • 12 weeks of meals and lodging • 2 week paid training to start the summer • 12 weeks @ $275/week • CWES will pay for Responding to Emergencies training if needed. This certification lasts for three years. • CWES will reimburse the full cost of lifeguard certification or recertification if needed. This certification lasts for two years. • CWES will reimburse the full cost of Wisconsin Boater Safety certification.
