LegalStudiesMinor - 18credits(atleast12creditsmustbeatorabovethe300-level) - Creditsmaynotbecountedtowardthefulfillmentofanyothermajororminor Programdescription TheLegalStudiesminorisdesignedtopreparestudentsforcareersinlawandrelated fields,andprovidestheopportunityforthedevelopmentofskillsandknowledgenecessary forlegalreasoningandadvocacy.BycompletingtherequirementsoftheLegalStudies minorstudentswillbeabletoanalyzetherelationshipbetweenlaw,government,and society;formulateargumentsandcritiquetheargumentsofothersthrougheffective communicationstrategies;evaluateandapplytheoriesandcriticismsoflawandpolitics; andexaminelegalandconstitutionalprincipleswithanin-depthknowledgeofrelevant politicalinstitutionsandpublicpolicies. Rationale TheAmericanBarAssociationrecommendsthatundergraduatesseekingacareerinalegal professionshouldtakecourseworkthatincludesthedevelopmentofskillsincluding: problemsolving,criticalreading,writingandediting,oralcommunication,politicaland socialknowledge,andexposuretothelaw.Thelearningoutcomesandcourseselectionfor thisprogramaredesignedtocultivateproficienciesintheseareas.Thisminorwill complimentanymajorfromanycollegeorschool,andiscreatedinresponsetostudent demandforaninterdisciplinaryminorthatwillpreparethemforacareerinlawor postgraduateworkinlawschool. Currently“pre-law”onlyexistsattheUniversityasacollectionof31recommendedclasses thatappearonastudent’sadvisementreport.Approximately60studentshavethisstatus, althoughthereisnoactualprogramaccomplishmentassociatedwithtakinganyamountof therecommendedcoursework,noranythingthatappearsonastudent’stranscript.The LegalStudiesminorprovidesawayforstudentstogaintheknowledgeandskillstheywill needinlawschoolorotherlaw-relatedfield,andwillrepresentthisaccomplishmenton thestudent’sacademicrecord. Learningoutcomes StudentswithaminorinLegalStudieswillbeableto: • Analyzetherelationshipbetweenlaw,government,andsociety. • Formulateargumentsandcritiquetheargumentsofothersthrougheffective communicationstrategies. • Evaluateandapplytheoriesandcriticismsoflawandpolitics. • Examineanddifferentiatelegalandconstitutionalprincipleswithanin-depth knowledgeofrelevantpoliticalinstitutionsandpublicpolicies.
