MEMORANDUM To: Faculty Senate Executive Committee From: Nizam Arain and Julia Johnson Date: April 28, 2016 Re: Revision to the Bullying Policy Below you will find a list of editorial changes made to the Anti-Bullying Policy per feedback from the Faculty Senate. These comments are divided into two categories—Changes Brad Seebach made to the document, which we accepted, and additional changes intended to clarify the policy and offering a suggestion for clarify process for implementing this policy in various governance groups. Seebach Edits (Per Faculty Senate Feedback) Pg 1: 1. Under Applicability, italicizing of the following: The University reserves the right to apply this policy to conduct occurring off-campus, if the University determines that the off-campus conduct could have an impact on the educational or work environment of the University. 2. Under Definitions and Bullying: a. Pt. 2 is changed to read “Deliberate and repeated use of abusive language, which may include profanity” from “Deliberate and repeated use of offensive language, including profanity” b. Pt. 5 is changed to read “Attempts to exploit an individual’s known psychological or physical vulnerability, including deliberately undermining or belittling behavior” Pg 4: 1. Under “Informal Complaints” add the following sentence “It is preferable to resolve complaints informally wherever possible and feasible.” Additional Changes to (Hopefully) Enhance Clarity Pg 4 1. Grid on page 4 – Informal Complaint Officials and Formal Complaint Officials are now the column titles in the grid to clarify who should be identified to help with informal or formal complaints (formerly “Preferred Official” and “Alternate Officials”) 2. Right after the table – There is a new paragraph that identifies who should be contacted should a complainant have concerns about the informal complaint officials. 3. Informal Complaint Process now precedes Formal Complaint Process. 4. We recommend that each governance group convene a task force who will develop a specific process for vetting complaints that aligns with their specific concerns and needs. Each of these process documents should be added as addenda to this policy. 5. Changed Seebachs use of practicable to feasible in first paragraph after heading “Informal Complaints” Pg 5 1. Under “Formal Complaint Process and Complaint Form” – Second paragraph moved to this section from where it used to live, which was right after the chart. Changed “preferred official” here to “investigating official.” Minor Changes 1. UW-L to UWL 2. Minor plural or spelling errors
