The main role player in wildlife conservation in South Africa, in particular is the private sector. Over 70% of all conservation land is privately owned and is maintained on business principles. Therefore wildlife trade takes place regularly at wildlife auctions and these animals need to be moved all over the country. Private rhino owners now are becoming less interested in keeping these animals because the private security costs exceeds the market value of the rhinos. Between and 2 and 3 rhinos are killed every day by poachers and we need to turn this trend around before it is too late. LD Van Essen is one of South Africa’s renowned Zoologists. He is a regular contributor to wildlife, travelling and nature publications and a recognized author of numerous publications. LD was an associate lecturer and researcher at the Centre for Wildlife Management of the University of Pretoria for many years where he also managed the exciting MPhil (Wildlife Management) program since its introduction. Southern African wildlife management in general is benefitting greatly from his expertise and consultancy.
