Communication Major
Transfer Plan from UW Colleges to UW-Stevens Point
If you plan to spend ONE semester at any of the UW Colleges before transferring, you
should try to complete the following courses during that semester:
 ENG 101 – College Writing and Critical Reading (ENGL 101)
Students whose writing skills need some polish prior to enrolling in a 4-year institution should take ENG 097
or 098. Either of these courses should help prepare you to take the Written Communication sequence (ENGL
101 and ENGL 202) at UW-Stevens Point.
 CTA 103 – Introduction to Public Speaking (COMM 101)
If you plan to spend TWO semesters at any of the UW Colleges before transferring, you
should complete the two courses listed above, plus the following courses:
 MAT 091 – Elementary Algebra (MATH 90) – if math placement score indicates
developmental math is necessary.
COMM 201 – Introduction to Communication Research is required for all Communication majors. It has a
prerequisite of MATH 90 or an appropriate math placement test score.
 CTA 101 – Interpersonal Communication (COMM 280) or
 CTA 201 – Introduction to Mass Communication (COMM 190) or
 CTA 203 – News & Information Writing (COMM 221)
COMM 280 is required for students in the Interpersonal and Organizational Communication emphasis.
COMM 190 is required for students in the Media Studies emphasis. COMM 203 is required for students in
the Public Relations emphasis and for students in the Journalism track of the Media Studies emphasis.
Other recommended courses include the following:
 LEC 100 – First Year Seminar
This course will fulfill our GEP: FYS requirement.
 AIS 101 – American Indian Studies, ART 290/WOM 295 – Women in the Arts, WOM
102 – Women’s Voices, or WOM 201 – Introduction to LGBTQ Studies
Any of these courses will satisfy our GEP: Interdisciplinary Studies requirement. We do not have many
course options for completing this requirement at UW-Stevens Point, so any of these courses would be an
excellent selection.
