CAPC Minutes 4/2015 Coursework Admissions and Programs Committee 4/2015 (A standing committee of Academic Board) Meeting 4/2015 of Coursework Admissions and Programs Committee commenced at 10.30am on Wednesday 15 July 2015 in the James McNeill Room, First Floor Building 3a, Clayton Campus. This process was part of the revised terms of reference and membership of CAPC recommended by CAPC (2/2015) and approved by Academic Board 2/2015. 6 Course Accreditation Management (CAM) Project Mr Lindsay MacDonald was scheduled to report on the Course Accreditation Management (CAM) Project; however this item was deferred to the next meeting. Melanie to invite Mr Lindsay McDonald to discuss the CAM project the next CAPC meeting on 19 August. 7 Due Ms Melanie Koo CAPC 5/2015. Course Architecture Unit Set Enhancements Mr Brent Muir reported on the Unit Set Enhancements implemented as part of the Course Architecture program of process changes and tabled the current study statements and proposed new study statements (see attached page 13). - 8 Member/Portfolio Students will be able to indicate the major or minor they intend to complete. Current study statement doesn’t include unit sets. New study statement has many improvements including: - improvement to layout makes the new version easier to use - identifies failed units and discontinued units - shows current enrolment and future enrolment - easily to tally up credit point total in order to course complete - identifies units sets to which units studied can apply. Course and Unit Proposals 8.1 Proposals for New Offerings (Courses, Major, Minor, Specialisation, Partners, Locations) The Committee endorsed the proposals for new offerings listed below subject to changes to the following course proposals: Master of Law and International Development - Amendment to page 5 Course Information. The Post Nominal award title should read as MLawIntDev. Master of Laws - Amendments to be made to page 19. Progression to further studies has been duplicated, need to delete one of these statements. Clarify the credit points on page 21 in the exit award statement. To be reviewed by Professor Sue Willis before submission to Academic Board. Master of International Relations (Double International Masters) - Monash (as home campus) students will be registered at Monash for the duration of the program. While at SJTU they will be enrolled in Monash Study Abroad units and also concurrently enrolled at STJU and thus have access to the resources of each institution. SJTU (as home campus) students are not normally registered at Monash until the time at which they come to Monash. While at their home University they do not require access to Monash resources. While at Monash they will be concurrently enrolled in each institution and have access to resources at each. In short, students whose home campus is Monash will have access S:\ADM\ES\Coursework Admissions & Programs Committee (CAPC)\Minutes\2015\04-2015-Capc-Minutes-Confirmed.Docx Page 2 CAPC Minutes 4/2015 to Monash on campus or on line resources throughout, however, students whose home campus is SJTU will only have access to Monash library resources while enrolled in Monash units while at Monash University. - Dr Sarah Jansen, University Library requested that Attachment D, on Management and Governance, include this information as it will have an impact on what resources students can access, and when. Resources required by staff also need to be clearly articulated for the same reasons. Clarity on these points will facilitate understanding and effective communication and management of staff and student access to scholarly resources in this double Masters programs and a statement should be included for the submission to Academic Board. - Professor Zlatko Skrbis, Professor Sue Willis and Ms Natalie Mitchell to review in further detail before submission to Academic Board. - - - - - Bachelor of Social Science Amendments to pg. 4 International Students should not read as “yes or no?”. Amend to read as “yes”. Page 6 – AQF level <7/8> should read as level 7. Honours degree of the Bachelor of Social Science Professor Willis noted that the title of the Honours degree of the Bachelor of Social Science is not AQF compliant. As such students (at Monash South Africa) graduating with this award will not be able to receive an AHEGS. Mr Hatwell asked whether the award title Bachelor of Social Science (Honours) would be compliant with South African Government requirements for award titles. Action: Professor Willis to check with Ms Judith Duffy. Bachelor of Fine Art (Honours) Dr Tregloan reported that the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture will introduce a new Art History and Theory specialisation to their honours degree course. The existing course structure will then lead to a Fine Art Studio specialisation, not strictly a new specialisation, but a new way of expressing graduation from the current course. The Honours degree of the Bachelor of Fine Arts will therefore offer graduation with either of 2 specialisations in this format. The Bachelor of Fine Art (Honours) was only available full time. Part time option to be removed from AHEGS statement. - Master of Advanced Engineering Mr Hatwell made a comment (supported by Professor Evans) that the reference to the postnominal in the proposal says “As for course title” but there is only one course title, while there are 8 awards. It was agreed that there should be 8 different post-nominals. - Corrections to AHEGS Statements Mr Hatwell noted that a number of corrections to AHEGS statements at the CPEG stage were not made before CAPC. Professor Willis responded that editorial changes such as these could be made prior to submission of proposals to Academic Board. For example, “The following courses are transitioning and therefore the course code needs to be disestablished however the course itself is not being disestablished.” In the notes on the table below, where it reads as “Disestablish No teach out, CA code change” it was suggested that this should read as “no teach out implications”. The following courses were incorrectly listed as managed by the Faculty of Business and Economics on the agenda. The amendments have been made to the table below. 3159 Master of Business Law is managed by Faculty of Law 3889 Master of Medical Radiations (Radiation Therapy) is managed by the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences. 3433 Master of Medical Ultrasound is managed by the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences. Changes to the guidelines may require changes in the policy and procedures. - Comment was made that there might be some sensitivity about the table which shows the Provost disestablishing courses. This is consistent with the delegated responsibility of the VC with respect to the VC Regulations (Regulation 16). However, Regulation 16 refers to the ability of the Academic Board to recommend disestablishment. The table should be revised to include an asterisked comment to the effect that Academic Board can recommend a disestablishment to the Provost. 10 Amendment to the list of admission pathways and entry requirements - The Committee supported the notion of the proposal but concern was raised regarding the wording used. - It was suggested that the wording be amended to ensure it did not imply that the Malaysian government could determine Monash entry requirements (which is not the intention). Ms Natalie Mitchell and Professor Sue Willis will consult with Mr Donald Wong to craft the appropriate wording. 11 Admission Pathways Experts Advisory Group (APEAG) The Committee: 1) Received and noted the report of meeting 2/2015 of Admissions Pathways Experts Advisory Group held on 2 July 2015. Noted the Sir Alexander Stewart/Orica Scholarship, Qantas Leadership Scholarship and Humanity Foundation Global Scholarship proposals. 2.
