Culver favors recommendation to arm campus security guards
DES MOINES (AP) --- Gov. Chet Culver says he favors a recommendation by
the presidents of the three state-run universities to arm campus police with guns.
Speaking in a news conference by telephone from Germany, where he's on an
economic development trip, Culver says the state has a responsibility to ensure
the safety of Iowans.
He says the shootings on the Virginia Tech campus in April highlights the need
for serious consideration of security on college campuses.
The Board of Regents is considering arming campus police.
Presidents of the University of Iowa, Iowa State University and the
University of Northern Iowa recommended giving guns to campus police last
week.
