Please do not use a previous edition – the book has been substantially reorganized, particularly in the later chapters. The ISBN is 0-13-230633-6. Prerequisites: In order to take this class you need a C or better in Math 1210, Math 1250, or Math 1270; alternatively, an AP Calculus AB score of 4 or better, or AP Calculus BC score of 3 or better. If you don’t have a very strong command of the material from Calculus I, you will do very poorly in this class. Course: This class covers more applications and techniques for the material you learned in Calculus I. You will learn about geometric applications of the integral, new integration techniques, and new numerical approximation techinques. At the end of the class we will cover a new topic – infinite series and power series expansions. Calculus II is more focused on computation and less on concept than Calculus I, but you will need a good understanding of the concepts from Calculus I in order to succeed. WebWork & Quizzes: Homework will be assigned on WebWork, and due every Friday. Your WebWork assignments, as well as general information about the system, can be accessed at: http://www.math.utah.edu/online/ww/classes.html There will also be in-class quizzes on a roughly weekly basis. Exams: You will have four mid-term exams, each taking up a full period of class, and the lowest score will be dropped. Time permitting, the preceding lecture will be dedicated to review. Absence from the exam will be excused ONLY in the case of university approved excuses, and except in extreme circumstances, you must inform me in advance. You must also get in touch with me promptly about making up the exam. Final Exam: The final exam will be Wednesday, May 2nd from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm. It will, of course, be cumulative, and you should bring your ID. Grading: Your grade will be based on: WebWork/Quizzes: 25% Midterms (drop 1): 45% Final Exam: 30% The final grades will be determined by the following cut-offs: A: B: C: D: 100%–93% 86.99%–83% 76.99%–73% 66.99%–63% A-: B-: C-: D-: 92.99%–90% 82.99%–80% 72.99%–70% 62.99%–60% B+: C+: D+: E: 89.99%–87% 79.99%–77% 69.99%–67% <60% ADA Statement: The Americans with Disabilities Act requires that reasonable accommodations be provided for students with physical, cognitive, systemic learning, and psychiatric disabilities. The last day to withdraw from this class is Friday, March 2nd . If you are unsure if you can pass the class with a satisfactory grade, please come talk to me so that we can discuss options. Tutoring: The Rushing Math Center offers free drop-in tutoring, a computer lab, and study areas for undergraduates. The Rushing Student Center is in the basement between LCB and JWB, the two math buildings on President’s Circle. The hours for the tutoring center are: Monday–Thursday: 8:00AM–8:00PM Friday: 8:00AM–6:00PM It is open through finals, except for university holidays. I highly recommend it, even simply as a place to sit down and get work done. For more personal tutoring, try the ASUU tutoring center.
