Textbook: Precalculus, by Larson and Hostetler (seventh edition). The ISBN is 0-618-64344-3.
Prerequisites: To enroll in this class you must have gotten a C or better in MATH 1010 or
MATH 1050. Alternatively, you may score 60 or better on the Accuplacer CLM. Regardless of how you fulfill the prerequisites, you will need a strong command of algebra in
order to do well in this class! If you are not feeling confident in your algebra skills, you
will have considerable trouble following the material we cover in class.
Course: The word “trigonometry” comes from the Greek words for “triangle” and “measure”.
Loosely speaking, we will spend the class studying triangles, and the relationships between their sides and angles. Usually we will do this by studying the trigonometric
functions (such as sin and cos). These concepts and functions are pervasive in the math
classes that follow this one. We will also introduce vectors, another important concept
with an intimate relationship to trigonometry.
WebWork & Quizzes: Homework will be assigned on WebWork, and due every Thursday.
Your WebWork assignments, as well as general information about the system, can be
accessed at:
http://www.math.utah.edu/online/ww/classes.html
There will also be in-class quizzes on a roughly weekly basis.
Exams: You will have four mid-term exams, each taking up about half a class, and the lowest
score will be dropped. Time permitting, the preceding lecture will be dedicated to review. Absence from the exam will be excused ONLY in the case of university approved
excuses, and except in extreme circumstances, you must inform me in advance. You
must also get in touch with me promptly about making up the exam.
Final Exam: The final exam will be Tuesday, May 1st from 6:00PM to 8:00PM. It will, of course,
be cumulative, and you should bring your ID.
Grading: Your grade will be based on:
WebWork/Quizzes: 25%
Midterms (drop 1): 45%
Final Exam:
30%
The final grades will be determined by the following cut-offs:
A:

86.99%–83%
76.99%–73%

ADA Statement: The Americans with Disabilities Act requires that reasonable accommodations be provided for students with physical, cognitive, systemic learning, and psychiatric disabilities. Please contact me at the beginning of the semester to discuss any such
accommodations that you may require for this course.
Withdrawal: The last day to drop this class is Wednesday, January 18th . The last day to
withdraw from this class is Friday, March 2nd . If you are unsure if you can pass the class
with a satisfactory grade, please come talk to me so that we can discuss options.
Tutoring: The Rushing Math Center offers free drop-in tutoring, a computer lab, and study
areas for undergraduates. The Rushing Student Center is in the basement between LCB
and JWB, the two math buildings on President’s Circle. The hours for the tutoring center
are:
Monday–Thursday: 8:00AM–8:00PM
Friday:
8:00AM–6:00PM
It is open through finals, except for university holidays. I highly recommend it, even
simply as a place to sit down and get work done.
