Instructor: Laura Strube Homework Guidelines Spring 2013
Homework assignments will be posted online on the course webpage:
at the beginning of each week and will be due on Wednesday of the following week.
Quizzes with be ”open homework” i.e. you will be allowed to use your homework on the
quiz given on the homework due date.
(Using someone else’s homework will result in a zero grade on the quiz)
Each Homework will Consist of Four Parts
• Reading Assignment: The pages of the textbook corresponding with the material to
be covered in the lectures during the upcoming week.
• Part A - Textbook Problems: These problems will be taken from the textbook. Answers
to the problems can be found in the back of the textbook so that you have immediate
feedback on your understanding of the material.
• Part B - Supplemental Problems: These will be problems that are not found in your
textbook. Solutions will be posted online after the homework due date.
• Review Problems (do not turn in): For those of you who learn by lots of practice, I
will provide a list of a few select problems from previous lectures that should provide
a good review. These problems are completely optional and should not be turned in.
Homework Expectations
1. Cover Sheet
Each week you will be expected to print the homework assignment from the course
webpage. Part A problems should be worked on your own paper and the printed
coversheet/Part B problems should be stapled to the front of your assignment.
2. Paper
- Homework pages are expected to have clean edges (not ragged or torn)
- Homework must be stapled.
I will not accept unstapled homework or homework that is torn with ragged
edges from a notebook. If you choose to turn in such homework you will
receive a zero on the assignment.
3. Content:
- Copy the problem and instructions from the text (Word Problems can be paraphrased)
- Write up should be professional: Neat and clear, without excessive ”scratch outs”.
- Please leave at least one blank line between problems and if you choose to work problems side by side, please draw a line down the center of your paper to clearly separate
the two columns of work.
- Show your work in logical order
- Use written explanations as necessary
- Homework answer should be indicated clearly by boxing or circling the solution
4. Graphs
- Graphs must be draw on graph paper and should be labeled clearly
- The Axis should be labeled
- Points and Lines should be labeled
- The problem number should be indicated clearly
Calculators, Study Partners, and Grading:
• Homework assignments will be graded on completion unless noted otherwise.
• Calculators will not be permitted on most exams and quizzes, thus you are highly
encouraged not to rely on them for your homework assignments.
• You are encouraged to work with your classmates on homework problems. However each student must write up and turn in their own assignment.
• Please be aware that because the answer to each solution is given in the back of
the text, you must show your work to receive credit for a problem. Failure to
show your work may result in a zero on the assignment.
Due Dates:
Approximately 14 assignments will be assigned over the course of the semester via the
course webpage. Assignments will be due on the Wednesday following the week in
which they are assigned giving you 10 days to complete the assignment.
Late Homework will not be accepted - However each student will be given 2 drops
at the end of the semester.
If for some reason you anticipate being unable to attend class, you may turn in your
assignment early by 11:30 am on the due date by placing your assignment in the box
outside my office door.
You may also submit a scanned pdf of your homework by emailing it to: strube.laura@utah.edu
