Textbook: Joseph L. Taylor, Foundation of Analysis. American Mathematical Society, Providence 2012. ISBN: 978-0-8218-8984-8 Course Web Page: www.math.utah.edu/∼sofia/math3210/ All course information and announcements will be posted on this website. It also contains material that may help you succeed in this course. I shall assume that you are keeping up to date with its contents. Prerequisites: ”C” or better in ((Math 2210 or Math 1260 or Math 1321 or Math 3140) and (Math 2200 or Math 2250 or Math 2270)). Course Overview: In this course you will develop logic skills and will enhance your ability to read, understand and write proof. Focus will be on the rigorous treaty of the construction of the real numbers, infinite series, continuity, derivation and integration of function of one variable. Please do not think that this class is Calculus! The emphasis will be on proofs, and on improving your ability to understand and explain abstract concept in a rigorous manner. Homework: Weekly homework will be assigned. Unless otherwise explained, all the homework will be due IN CLASS on Wednesday. I will drop your lowest homework grade. Homework up to one hour late will be accepted, but it will count for just 89% of the credit. Homework up to 24 hours late will be accepted, but it will count as 75% of the credit. Unless exceptional and documented circumstances arise homework more than 24 hours late will not be accepted. Exams: There will be two full hours exams on Feb. 11th. and on Mar. 11th, and a 2-hours final exam on Tuesday, December 16th at 8:00 am (date and time for the final are selected by the department). A makeup on a missed test will be given only when exceptional and documented circumstances arise that are beyond a student’s control. Except in the case of emergency, prior approval for a makeup must be obtained from the instructor. Unless otherwise explained, the exams will be closed book, closed notes, and no calculators are allowed (or needed). You will be able to have an A4 double faced cheat sheet. Grading: The grades of homework, exams, and finals will weight as follow in your overall average. Weekly Homework 30% Exam 1 20% Exam 2 20% Final 30% I reserve the right to change the grade scheme as I see fit. Any other grade schemes will only be beneficial to your grade as compared to the above standard. Using the above weights letter grades will be roughly (depending from the class curve) assigned as follows: 90-100 A, 80-89 B, 65-79 C, 50-64 D. ADA: The Americans with Disability Act requires that reasonable accommodations be provided for students with cognitive, systemic, learning and psychiatric disabilities. Please contact me at the beginning of the quarter to discuss any such accommodations you may require for this course. Collaboration: I do not recommend to do math alone. When I was an undergraduate I reckon I learned as much from my teachers as from studying together with my class mates. Everyone is different and, has different strengths and weaknesses. Thus something that to you could seem really hard, for someone else could be easy. Furthermore, by having to explain something you understand to other people, you always end up in understanding it better. In any moment of a collaboration, both if you are explaining or being taught, you gain something. Having said this, when you are writing down your homework in order to turn them in you must work alone. The expectation is that when you are working with other people you are writing down stuff on a black board and taking notes on a scratch piece of paper. When you go home and wrap it all together in order to turn in the assignment your work should be in your own words and not copied. Extra Help: Dot not hesitate to come to my office during office hours or by appointment to discuss a homework problem or any aspect of the course. The T. Benny Rushing Mathematics Tutoring Center offers free tutoring. Beginning the second week of classes, tutoring will be available from 8am to 8pm Monday through Thursday and 8am to 6pm on Friday. If you want to hire an outsider tutor (for a fee), you can find a list of such people through the math department. Tips: One of my former math teachers used to say that “who does not exercises cannot learn mathematics”. And this is especially true for an advanced class such as Math 3210. Thus the first tip I have for you is never be afraid of doing to many exercise: the ones I assign for homework are the minimum necessary for you to learn from this class! If you struggle with them do not be afraid to do more and, more importantly ask for help. Remember, I am here to guide you through this class, but I cannot give you a hand if you do not help yourself first and if I do not know that you are struggling. Try to come prepared for class. I know that it is sometimes hard to come to the lecture having already read the material that will be explained, but it is really useful! For example, if you had any problem you could ask questions directly to me on the lecture day and I will be able to shape the class to your needs. If you did not find the time to read the book before the lecture, do it afterward: studying the book and keeping up with the subject is essential to get good grades in this class. I will work on the assumption that you are reading the book at the pace followed by the lectures and that you are working on the suggested problems throughout the term and not just before the exam. Attendance: I will operate under the assumption that you are attending class. I certainly think that it is a good idea doing so, even if my feeling will not be hurt if you happen to miss a class or two. Even in case of emergency you will be always responsible for the covered in class that you might have missed, including changes to homework and exams dates. The only way to hand in homework and getting full credit for it is to attend class the day in which it is due. I value your opinion: If you have any remark or suggestion you can either e-mail me or use the anonymous feedback form reachable from the course webpage.
