Devices: Calculators are not required and will not be permitted on in-class quizzes or exams. During in-class quizzes and exams, all devices must be powered off. Please be courteous at other times. Course Objectives: To improve mathematical reasoning, and to prepare for future math learning in calculus, linear algebra, and discrete mathematics. Topics to be covered include numbers, functions, sequences, series, counting problems, graphs of functions, inverse functions, polynomials, rational functions, n-th roots, exponential functions, logarithms, piecewise defined functions, matrices, and matrix equations. For every hour of lecture, the university requires/suggests that you invest 2 to 3 hours of additional work (every week). For this 4 credit hour class, it means that you need to put in 8 to 12 hours of outside class time on a weekly basis. Work through examples in the text. Prepare a regular schedule and maintain it. Adjust its length as needed. Contact me immediately when problems arise. Tutoring: The T. Benny Rushing Math Center offers free drop-in tutoring, a computer lab, and study areas for undergraduates. The rooms are in the basement of LCB and JWB. The hours for the fall semester are 8 am to 8 pm Monday-Thursday and 8 am to 6 pm on Friday. The tutoring center will open September 2. Each week a WeBWorK assignment is due Friday at 4am, with exception on August 29 and October 17. No late homework is allowed. Quizzes: 10 minute quizzes will be given at the start of class every Friday except September 25, October 17, October 31, and November 21. One low score will be dropped. Exams: 50 minute exams will be given on the following dates: Friday, September 26 Friday, October 31 Friday, November 21 You MUST bring a valid ID to any quiz or exam. No retakes are allowed. Final Exam: Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2014 1:00 - 3:00 pm The exam will be cumulative. Early or late final will not be given.
