NATIONAL WILDERNESS PRESERVATION SYSTEM
Wilderness was established for the use and
enjoyment of the American people today and
forever. The wilderness managing agencies,
together with American citizens, work to ensure
that the 105 million acres of wilderness we have
today remain wild for future generations to enjoy.

Wilderness Facts
The National Wilderness Preservation System includes
662 areas, found in 44 states, totaling 105 million acres,
comprising 5 percent of the U.S. Land mass (almost the
size of Montana).
Americans value wilderness most as sources of clean
water and air, places to see wildlife in natural settings,
and as a legacy to pass to their children.
More than 12 million people visit wilderness each year
to hike, ride horses, hunt, fish, cross-country ski, float
rivers, take pictures, and stargaze.
