TH This landmark legislation ANNIVERSARY OF WILDERNESS ACT permanently protected some of the most natural and undisturbed places in America 1964 – 2004 through establishment of the National Wilderness Preservation System where, “...the earth and its community of life are untrammeled by man...” NATIONAL WILDERNESS PRESERVATION SYSTEM Wilderness was established for the use and enjoyment of the American people today and forever. The wilderness managing agencies, together with American citizens, work to ensure that the 105 million acres of wilderness we have today remain wild for future generations to enjoy. Wilderness Facts The National Wilderness Preservation System includes 662 areas, found in 44 states, totaling 105 million acres, comprising 5 percent of the U.S. Land mass (almost the size of Montana). Americans value wilderness most as sources of clean water and air, places to see wildlife in natural settings, and as a legacy to pass to their children. More than 12 million people visit wilderness each year to hike, ride horses, hunt, fish, cross-country ski, float rivers, take pictures, and stargaze.
