The student will learn the basics of instruction in the area of aerobic types of exercise and weight training. This course will enable the student to instruct as well as supervise these types of programs. The students will learn basic anatomy, and exercise physiology as it applies to the movement of the body during exercise. This course will address and explain safety and teaching methods for the exercise instructor in the development of a comprehensive fitness program. 1) The student will be able to develop a total fitness program for an individual or a group 2) The student will be able to organize stretches, cardiovascular and muscular exercises in a fitness program for an individual or a group. 3) The student will be able to instruct their program clearly through oral communication. 4) The student will be able to identify healthy and unhealthy food choices. 5) The student will be able to identify contraindicated exercises as it relates to specific populations. Suspected cases of academic misconduct are reported to the Dean of Instructional Services. SSCC Attendance Policy: Students are expected to attend all classes for which they are registered, to be prompt and to remain in class/lab for the entire time. Attendance will be recorded at every class/lab meeting. On the final grade report, instructors are required to identify the last day of attendance for all students who receive a grade of “F” or “U.” Students who are unable to attend class regularly, regardless of the reason or circumstance, should withdraw from the class. Withdrawal from class can affect eligibility for federal financial aid. Introduction to the course and wellness program 2. Understanding basic anatomy & physiology as it relates to exercise movements 3. Understanding the importance of warm-up and cool-down techniques and the role it plays in developing a sound exercise program 4. Demonstrating safe and unsafe exercise movements in aerobic & anaerobic exercise 5. Demonstrating proper spotting techniques in weight training 6. Demonstrating various exercise routines, (sculpting, aerobic dance, step aerobics, kick boxing, circuit training, strength training & yoga- like stretches) 7. Understanding the value of non-impact aerobics 8. Developing and designing safe and effective movements for the different muscle movements throughout aerobic and anaerobic exercise. 9. Learn how to modify workouts for individuals who have specific problems (eg. Back problems, arthritis, etc.) 10. Learn how to select appropriate music and beats for different exercise routines 11. Understanding the importance of toning the muscles with resistance exercise 12.
