SYLLABUS Summer 2010 THR 120 SECTION 02 3 Credit Hours THEATRE APPRECIATION Course Information Prerequisite(s) Course Description Learning Outcomes None This course is designed to increase appreciation of contemporary theatre. Emphasis is given to the theatre as an art form through the study of the history and theory of drama and the contributions of the playwright, actor, director, designer, and technician to modern media. Attendance at theatre productions may be required. 1. You will understand that theatre is an active experience designed to explore and better appreciate the human experience by stimulating your imagination and critical thinking. 2. You will be able to recognize and evaluate the individual and collaborative contributions of various theatre practitioners to a given theatrical production. 3. You will recognize and understand the value of theatre throughout recorded history. 4. Provide evidence of a valid excused absence: excused absences include military service, accidents, court appearances, illness of the student or illness of a dependant family member. 2. The student must submit the evidence (original documents only) to the instructor and arrange for the make-up exam within one week of the last day covered by the excuse. 3. It is the student’s responsibility to arrange with the instructor to make up exams. 4. Text Readings You are required to be prepared for each class, this means you must have read the chapters to be covered and be prepared to answer questions and participate fully in activities. Attendance In Class Projects Participation 400 points Tests 2 @ 125 points Vocabulary Tests 2 @ 50pts You will receive a daily grade for your active participation in this class. Grades for any particular class period will vary depending on the scheduled in-class projects and activities. To receive maximum credit you MUST be prepared and on time for each class. Please be on time. Understandably, we all have emergencies that cause us to run late but habitual lateness is a matter of choice. When a student chooses to be consistently late they adversely affect the rhythm and atmosphere of the class. Remember your actions affect others and reflect on you so show respect for yourself and others by choosing to be on time. TESTS: The form of the test will be appropriate to the material covered and will range from multiple choice to short essay to object identification. The material covered on any particular test is noted in the class outline calendar. You will receive a bank of 100 general vocabulary words. Comprehension of these words is necessary to fully understand the text. Each test will require you to match definitions with 50 of the words. Students are required to attend and write a performance report on the following play: Performance Reports 1 @ 100 points Final 150 points Final Examination JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT July 15-26 Bean-Brown Theatre (SSCC) The report is due the 1st class period after the close of the show. You will receive a guideline sheet outlining the requirements of the report The final will be an in-class evaluation of what the student has learned. The instructor will determine the nature of the evaluation based on what he believes will be most valuable to the students. Suspected cases of academic misconduct are reported to the Dean of Instructional Services. STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO ATTEND ALL CLASSES for which they are registered. Instructors are required to keep a record of attendance for each class meeting. It is the responsibility of the student to keep a record of his/her absences. Attendance Policy STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO ATTEND CLASS ON TIME AND ARE EXPECTED TO REMAIN IN CLASS FOR THE DURATION OF THE PUBLISHED CLASS TIME. Students attending for less than 30 minutes or half the scheduled time for the class, whichever is greater, will be considered absent for that class meeting. Instructors are not required to give additional time to students who are tardy for tests or quizzes. Student absences are calculated from the first day of classes. For the purpose of financial aid, attendance the first day of class is essential. When a student registers late, the classes that the student missed from the first scheduled class date are counted as absences.
