2012-2013 Annual Report of the Subcommittee on the
Breadth Requirement in American Cultures
In fulfilling its charge as established by Regulation 300 of the Berkeley Division of the
Academic Senate, the Committee on Educational Policy’s Subcommittee on the Breadth
Requirement in American Cultures (AmCult) carried out the following activities. The chair
of AmCult was Professor Ignacio Navarrete (Spanish & Portuguese).

The Subcommittee also reviewed and approved a number American Cultures
Engaged Scholars courses to contribute to its growing cohort.
The Subcommittee regularly invited American Cultures (AC) Center Coordinator
Victoria Robinson to attend meetings. Dr. Robinson updated the members on the
overall direction of the American Cultures curriculum. These updates included
information regarding the American Cultures Engaged Scholars program, AC
Center-sponsored workshops for discussing the curriculum, and updates on the
student advisory board coordinated with the ASUC. Dr. Robinson also participated
in the discussions surrounding course proposals and student petitions.

The Subcommittee approved an amendment change to Berkeley Division Bylaw
33.A to align its membership with other division bylaws.
