Committee on the Status of Women & Ethnic Minorities
2011-2012 Annual Report
In fulfilling its charge as established in the by laws of the Berkeley Division of the
Academic Senate, the Committee on the Status of Women & Ethnic Minorities (SWEM)
carried out the following activities during the 2011-2012 academic year:
Departmental Program Reviews: Landscape Architecture & Environmental Planning;
Environmental Science & Policy Management; Molecular & Cell Biology; Social
Welfare; French; Slavic; and, Physics.
Other activities:
- Adopted a conflict-of-interest policy
- Agreed on standard wording to be included in SWEM academic program review
memos that encourages departments and Schools to work with the Division of
Equity and Inclusion to develop and/or enhance faculty mentoring programs and,
if lacking, to design a strategic plan for diversity.
- Completed revisions to the SWEM Guide to Faculty Advancement and Promotion
at UC Berkeley to conform to current academic personnel policies and campus
practices.
- Based on continuing concerns that the discussion of pay equity at Berkeley
continues year after year without the benefit of empirical evidence that is readily
available, SWEM petitioned DIVCO to send a formal request to Chancellor
Birgeneau asking that a campus wide comprehensive pay equity study of
Berkeley ladder-rank faculty be completed and a report issued by October 1,
2012.

Collaborated with the Committee on Student Diversity & Academic Development
(SDAD) on the implications for diversity on the campus as a result of recent
changes to campus policy to increase the percentage of the population of nonresident and international student.
