Committee on the Status of Women & Ethnic Minorities 2010-2011 Annual Report Approved, September 21, 2011 In fulfilling its charge as established in the by laws of the Berkeley Division of the Academic Senate, the Committee on the Status of Women & Ethnic Minorities (SWEM) carried out the following activities during the 2010-2011 academic year: Departmental Program Reviews: Chemistry; East Asian Languages & Culture; Nuclear Engineering; Linguistics; School of Business and, School of Public Policy Other activities: The new electronic biobib form will include a separate “Diversity Statement” section to allow faculty to describe their contributions to promoting diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunity as provided for under the Academic Personnel Manual section 210.1.d. The VC-E&I has acknowledged the committee’s important involvement in seeing this project to fruition. The Chair and Vice Chair, along with VC-E&I staff completed a comprehensive revision of the SWEM Tenure Guide. Plans are underway to produce a faculty advancement guide in the upcoming year. A proposed by law change to SWEM ex officio membership was approved by the Divisional Council. The Associate Vice Provost for Faculty Equity and the Vice Chancellor for Equity & Inclusion would both become ex officio non-voting members of the Committee. The Berkeley Division will vote on the revision at the Fall 2011 meeting. Commented on the draft statements by the Academic Council and UCLA concerning the future of the university Workplace Violence Prevention Policy Report and Recommendations on the systemwide Task Force on Senate Membership Reviewed the School of Public Health Equity Study SWEM and EECS faculty member Professor Pruitt the College of Engineering Task Force on Diversity & Inclusion. Guests: Senate Chair Fiona Doyle commended SWEM on its proactive engagement in the program review process. The committee’s reports not only have identified concerns regarding equity issues within departments, but also have proposed concrete suggestions to address the issues. VC-Equity and Inclusion (VC-E&I) Gibor Basri was invited to discuss Operational Excellence and potential impacts on staff equity. Professor Nicolas Jewell, who initiated a pay equity study when he was at the Office of the President in 2007, shared his views on the revisions to that draft recently undertaken by the University Committee on Affirmative Action and Diversity (UCAAD). The committee continued its annual practice of meeting with the outgoing and incoming BIR Chairs to discuss issues of mutual interest.
