President’s Message
The year 2000 will no doubt
go into the annals of Calhoun
Community College’s history
as one of the most significant,
successful, and I dare say,
busiest ever.
As we, through this Annual
Report, take a look back at
our many successful programs
and initiatives, significant
accomplishments of our
faculty and staff, and the
outstanding achievements of
our students, we are mindful of
the fact that much of the
success we have realized this
year could not have been
possible without the support
and contributions of our many
community partners and
friends.
This year, we celebrated
the official opening of Phase I
of our Aerospace and
Advanced Technology Park,
the Aerospace Training
Center. Just three days after
this event, we continued the
development of Technology
Park by breaking ground on
Phase II of this project, the
Advanced Manufacturing
Processes Lab.
2
In February 2000, we
announced our partnership
with ACT, Inc. to establish an
ACT Testing Center on our
Decatur campus. By last
October, we were inviting the
community to join us as we
held the ribbon cutting
ceremony for this center — the
first authorized ACT Center in
the Southeast United States.
During last fall’s Inservice
program, which marked the
official beginning of our 20002001 academic year, we
welcomed 58 new employees
to the Calhoun family, an alltime record. These new
members of the Calhoun
family came from eight different states and one foreign
country, and through their
varied educational and
professional backgrounds,
have added a significant level
of knowledge, talent and
diversity to the College.
Another major initiative
that will continue through
much of this year is the
College’s preparation for our
SACS (Southern Association of
Colleges and Schools)
Reaccredidation visit this
November. Many members of
our faculty and staff, under
the outstanding leadership of
our SACS co-chairs Dr. Dena
Stephenson and Dr. Jerry
Armor, continue to spend
countless hours gathering
information and completing
the necessary documents and
reports as we “gear-up” for this
very important event.
The efforts
and initiatives of the
Calhoun
Foundation
continue to
play an
extremely valuable role in the
College’s success. The
Partners in Progress campaign,
a major project of the
Foundation to secure funding
for Phase III of Technology
Park, completed 2000 with
close to $4 million in public
and private support for this
phase of Technology Park.
As we continue our efforts
toward meeting the educational, training, and workforce
development needs of North
Alabama, we take this opportunity to express our gratitude
for your invaluable contributions to our success and invite
your continued involvement
and support.
Thank you for your interest
and commitment.

Long-awaited “GRAND OPENING” for
Aerospace Training Center Held
On Friday, December 8, 2000, the College saw a
dream come true when we officially opened the
doors of our Aerospace Training Center (ATC). The
building’s official opening was marked with a special
Grand Opening Ceremony that attracted close to
300 persons.
Construction of the 38,000 square foot ATC
began in July 1999 and actually proceeded ahead
of schedule. The ATC, which represents Phase I of the
College’s $40 million, three-phase Aerospace and
Advanced Technology Park, is home for the
College’s new Aerospace Technology associate’s
degree program. In addition, the building continues
to be used for the training of employees from
Boeing’s Decatur rocket plant as well as individuals
employed at a number of other aerospace-related
companies in the area.
“Calhoun’s new Aerospace Training Center, as
well as the two other buildings which will be a part of
our Aerospace and Advanced Technology Park,
represents one of the most innovative and important
projects to be undertaken in the college’s 52-year
history,” said Calhoun President Richard Carpenter.
“This mammoth project represents a true partnership among
education, business, and the
private sector and will help to
solidify Calhoun’s place as an
active participant in economic
and workforce development in
our state,” Carpenter added.
Just three days after the
grand opening of the ATC,
construction began on the
Advanced Manufacturing
Processes Lab, Phase II of
Technology Park. This portion of
Tech Park is scheduled for
completion in November 2001.

Calhoun Opens Southeast’s First
Authorized ACT Center
Calhoun officially opened the first authorized ACT Center in the Southeast United States
with a ribbon-cutting ceremony held last
November. Calhoun’s ACT Center, a testing
and training center to help both businesses
and individuals achieve their goals, brings
high-tech and web-based testing and job
training to individuals and businesses throughout the community. The Center gives local
businesses convenient and affordable access
to hundreds, and eventually more than 2,000,
training programs—many of them available
through the Internet, so employees can be
trained at work or at home.
The Calhoun ACT Center offers the best of
both worlds, said Center Director Denny
Smith—providing services both on-site and
through the Internet. “Calhoun has a history of
providing quality education and training to
increase the skills of our local workforce, and
now, our ACT Center and the Internet will
make these services even more accessible to
the community,” said Smith.
“A skilled workforce is crucial in a prosperous economy,” said Calhoun President Richard
Carpenter. “Our new ACT Center will be a
resource for area employees and employers to
benefit from the latest training programs and
methods. Local residents can use the ACT
Center, as well, to boost their skills and qualify
for better jobs. Employers can use the assessment and training programs to hire and
develop employees, raising productivity,
morale and profits.”
Carpenter added, “The ACT Center will
enhance Calhoun’s mission, which is to
provide education and training to develop the
workforce and the economy.”
The Calhoun ACT Center is part of a
nationwide network of centers, located primarily at community colleges.

College Observes “Campus Week of
Dialogue”
On Friday, October 27, 2000, the College
joined the U.S. Department of Education and
hundreds of other colleges and universities
across the nation to observe the 3rd Annual
“Campus Week of Dialogue”, designed to
promote racial reconciliation and college
opportunity in the United States.
Dr. Raymond Winbush, director of the Race
Relations Institute at Fisk University in Nashville,
Tennessee, served as guest lecturer and discussion leader for the event, speaking on the topic,
“Building One America: The Complex Issues of
Race and Diversity.” Close to 100 students,
faculty and staff participated in the event.
Approval of New Academic Programs
Expands College Offerings
Last year’s approval of two new programs
at Calhoun has allowed the College to expand
its course offerings, while helping to prepare
students to enter careers in the high tech and
medical fields.
Last fall, the College begin admitting the
first students into its new Aerospace Technology
Associate’s Degree program. The program is
preparing graduates for employment in
aerospace and related industries through classroom and laboratory instruction in propulsion
structures and assembly. Students enrolled in
the program are gaining valuable experience
through training on state-of-the-art equipment
located in the College’s new Aerospace
Training Center.
In December, the College received final
approval from the Alabama Commission on
Higher Education (ACHE) and the Alabama
State Board of Education to offer courses for a
new Paramedic Certificate in Emergency
Medical Services.
With less than three weeks from the date of
final approval until the first day of classes for the
spring semester, the College’s EMS faculty and
staff were able to get the program up and
going and admit its first students.
According to Brenda Beasley, chair of
Calhoun’s EMS department, the new
Paramedic program is a natural fit for Calhoun
because of the College’s successful track
record in preparing students for the EMT state
licensure exam. Over the last five examination
periods, Calhoun graduates have exceeded
both the state and national averages on
passage rates for the Basic (State Average:
64%; National Average: 72%; Calhoun
Average: 87%) and the Intermediate EMT
programs (State: 62%; National: 63%;
Calhoun: 86%).

Kentucky (left) and Glenn
McCullough of Mississippi (right) with
Dr. Richard Carpenter. Ms. Harris and
Mr. McCullough, two of the three
TVA Board members, were among a
group of state and local elected
officials and business leaders invited
as the first group to tour Calhoun’s
new Aerospace Training Center.

Program Helping Local
Employers to “GROW
THEIR OWN”
A unique partnership
among education, business
and industry, students and
parents is allowing local
companies to “grow their
own” employees by specifying
the kind of educational
background and work skills
they want students to have.
The Tech Prep Internship
Program, a partnership involving Calhoun; Athens State
University; Delphi Steering
Systems; and school systems
from Athens, Decatur,
Hartselle, Limestone County
and Morgan County, is
preparing students to successfully enter the workforce with a
degree in hand and the
appropriate skills and abilities
needed by local business.
The first two graduates
from the program, Brandon
French and Jarrod Wayne
Davis, were honored earlier
this year during a special
reception. Both French and
Davis entered the internship
program in 1996 during their
senior year in high school while
they were participants in the
Technologies 2000 Tech Prep
6
program. After graduating
from Calhoun with their associate’s degree, both went on to
complete their bachelor’s
degree in business from
Athens State. While attending
Calhoun and Athens State,
both French and Davis worked
as interns with Delphi Saginaw,
and are currently employed in
permanent positions with the
company.
“The Tech Prep Internship
Program is a win-win situation
for all involved,” commented
Dr. Mary Yarbrough, director
of the Technologies 2000 Tech
Prep Consortium. Upon
successful completion of the
program, graduates have two
college degrees (an A.A.S. in
a technology field of study
from Calhoun and a B.S.
degree in Management of
Technology from Athens) as
well as four years of on-the-job
training and an opportunity for
full-time, permanent employment with the participating
company.

The Calhoun Foundation
The Year 2000 was a busy
one for the Calhoun
Foundation. The primary
emphasis throughout the year
for the Foundation was the
Partners in Progress campaign
on behalf of the
Information/Visualization
Technology Center, Phase III of
the Aerospace and
Advanced Technology
Complex. This campaign is
now over the $4.7 million mark,
and while many corporate
grants are still pending, the
College and the Foundation
will seek bond funding and
additional federal grants to
complete the $7.5 million
workforce development
project on time.
16
Many thanks go to all
elected officials, volunteers,
supporters, and Calhoun
colleagues who are working to
achieve this ambitious plan.
Appropriate recognition of all
partners will be planned
following the completion of
Technology Park in spring 2003.
This portion of the Annual
Report, dedicated to the work
of the Foundation, includes
four sections:
◆
Highlights of Events
throughout the past year;
◆
The Foundation Board of
Directors;
◆
Revenue/Expenditures;
and
◆

Three new beautification projects were
completed in late spring. Ronnie Sims,
Grounds Foreman, directed the landscaping projects at Harris Hall and Kelley
Gymnasium. A pavilion was built behind
Harris Hall to give students who wish to
smoke a sheltered area away from the
busy main entrance. The Commemorative
Walkway, located in front of Kelley
Gymnasium, was dedicated during the
Honors Day Convocation on April 28.
Engraved bricks may be purchased by
calling the Foundation Office at 256/3062578.
2
A reception was held on April 25 to honor
our 26 colleagues retiring during the 19992000 academic year. The retirees were
recognized with the installation of a brick
in the College’s new Commemorative
Walkway in each person’s name. In
addition to their inclusion in the Brick
Walkway, each retiree received several
tokens of appreciation and a framed
certificate denoting their years of service.
