2014 EASTERN KENTUCKY SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY FAIR Morehead State University Students (Grades 4-12) are invited to participate in the 2014 EASTERN KENTUCKY SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY FAIR. The fair will be held on Saturday February 22, 2014 at Morehead State University in Morehead, Kentucky. The registration form must be received no later than Feb 10, 2014. Purpose: The 2014 EASTERN KENTUCKY SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY FAIR gives Eastern Kentucky students an opportunity to exhibit science and engineering projects on which they have worked and to have their exhibits evaluated by expert judges. This venue provides students with learning experience in critical thinking, problem solving and leadership in an academic setting. This venue also provides students with the opportunity to earn rewards and honors and further promotes interests in science. Division: The 2014 EASTERN KENTUCKY SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY FAIR will have two divisions: Division I (Grades 4-8) and Division II (Grades 9-12). Both divisions contain specific content specified below. Eligibility: All students enrolled in Grades 4-12 in the Commonwealth of Kentucky are eligible to participate, whether they are attending a public, private or parochial school or are being home schooled. Students in all counties of Eastern KY are encouraged to participate, particularly students in the following counties: Carter, Elliott, Greenup, Johnson, Lewis, Morgan, Pike, and Rowan. Students (Grades 4-12) can enter exhibits of their science or engineering projects in the following categories. No exhibitor will be permitted to change categories, age groups, or exhibits once the official Registration form has been submitted. 1. Animal Sciences 3. Biochemistry 5. Chemistry 7. Physics and Astronomy RULES for 2014 EASTERN KENTUCKY SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY FAIR A contestant may enter only one exhibit. Applications and required forms for exhibit entries must be received by the fair director and must be received no later than February 10, 2014. There is no registration fee required for the fair. All work on exhibits must be done by the student or group of students, though teachers and sponsors may advise. Any exhibits, which indicate the direct assistance of the teacher, or any other outside help (such as parental) will be disqualified by the judges. Teachers or sponsors may advise, but must not construct any part of the exhibit. Exhibits must meet certain size limitations and safety standards. Exhibits must be confined to a table or floor space of 61 cm front to back and by 122 cm side to side, or smaller. Projects must be less than 274 cm high. Construction of exhibits must be durable, and movable parts firmly attached for safety precaution. All switches and cords for 110-volt operation must be of an approved variety. Electrical cords should be at least 10 feet long. (An electrical outlet is provided only upon request so be sure to circle yes on the application form if needed.) An exhibit must include a record book outlining the purpose of the project, procedure used, source of data and information, summary and conclusions, etc. Record books must be kept and made available for observation and examination by the judges for all exhibits. The record book should be free of spelling and grammatical errors. Remember, you must be present at the specified time during the judging of the exhibits, and your exhibit and Record Book must be available to the judges during the judging process. Exhibitors must provide their own display surfaces. Only table space will be provided. If you need to support your display, you need to obtain and prepare the materials so that the display will be supported The exhibitor's school affiliation must not be visible until judging is complete. Exhibits may not have live animals (vertebrate or invertebrate), preserved vertebrate animals or parts, (including embryos), hazardous materials, or material that might be deemed offensive. Research involving the use of animals may display drawings, charts, or graphs to illustrate the conditions, developments, and results of the investigations. Photographs of surgical techniques depicting vertebrate animals in other than normal conditions may not be displayed on the student's exhibit but may be contained in an accompanying notebook. Any Registration form for a project involving vertebrate animals, human subjects, recombinant DNA, or tissues must be accompanied by copies of all completed certification forms required to be eligible for exhibiting space. On the day of the SCIENCE FAIR: The fair will begin with the onsite registration, followed by exhibit set up, exhibit judging, lunch break, public viewing of exhibits, and an award ceremony. Specific times for each of these events will be sent out later. Awards will include: 1) Certificates for 1st and 2nd place winners in each category, and 2) Recognition for all participants. Awards will be given according to minimum standards to be determined by the judges. The decision of the judges is final.
