LESSON NINE- KICKING A HABIT Demonstrate the difficulty of giving up an activity that has become part of your life Define addiction Demonstrate the stages of addiction, with emphasis on nicotine addiction Define withdraw, and discuss symptoms Demonstrate ways to support friends who is withdrawing from a drug This lesson demonstrates the risk of addiction and the difficulty of quitting tobacco. Since surveys show that many students begin smoking in middle school, the lesson also gives tips for supporting friends who are trying to quit. LESSON TEN- DRUG JEOPARDY Describe physical, emotional, and mental symptoms of cocaine use Discuss the effects of tobacco, alcohol, marijuana and cocaine use Review information and skills from the unit Studies show that effective drug prevention programs teach information and skills that will educate students to stay drug free.
