Class Policies and Procedures (Rev. 010/11) ENG III, AP ENG III, ENG II, and Lights, Camera Fiction: From Books to Hollywood “You always have the freedom of choice, but you never have the freedom from consequences.” Kay M. Hedrick Note from the Instructor It is expected that all students work together to create a respectful and disciplined classroom. To achieve this a few simple policies are necessary. As a student, it is your responsibility to comply with these policies. If you decide not to comply, there will be logical consequences. Through the enforcement of these policies, fairness and order in the classroom should be accomplished. A. Class Rules In addition to the Rowan County District and Rowan County Sr. High School Rules and Policies: Respect the people, equipment, and furnishings of Room 91 and the school. 1. No swearing, teasing, name calling or put downs 2. No personal grooming, eating or drinking during class time. 3. Follow directions the first time they are given. 4. Do not interrupt or disrupt class time. 5. Have all appropriate materials and supplies at your desk and be in your assigned seat when the bell rings. B. If you CHOOSE to Break a Rule Punishments will always fit the crime. Of course there are behaviors that will warrant a Disciplinary Referral immediately. Examples include gross subordination or violent behavior. Behaviors that are less severe, but in violation of the basic rules of the class will be dealt with in the manner described below. This format is in no way all inclusive and is subject to change: 1st Incident – Verbal Warning and Incident Recorded 2nd Incident - 1 minute detention – Stay in class one minute after the bell and Incident Recorded (Complete Written Behavior Sheet during Detention) 3rd Incident – Conference with teacher before or after school – Student will call parent and explain the incident to parent in the presence of teacher. A Behavior Action Plan will be sent home to be completed by the student and their parent/guardian to be returned to the teacher the following day. Should a student not report for assigned conference, disciplinary action will immediately defer to a 4th Incident. 4th Incident – Disciplinary Referral to Office and Parent Phone Call C. D. E. F. G. H. Tardies and Late Arrivals According to the Rowan County Discipline Policy, a student is considered late to class if they are not in the classroom when the bell stops ringing. Tardies will be recorded by the teacher and will result in disciplinary action. If you are late do NOT disrupt the class. Place any note regarding your lateness beside the teacher’s computer and find your seat. Coming to class without required materials necessitating leaving the classroom to obtain items will result in a tardy. Make-Up Tests If an excused absence occurs on a test date, the student must schedule a time to make-up the test with the teacher after school. Entering the Classroom You are to enter the classroom without screaming, running, or otherwise causing chaos. Students who do not do this will be asked to leave the room and reenter as expected. It is expected that you check the bellwork board when you enter and pick up handouts or textbooks if instructed to do so. You should then get anything you need around the room (grade check, pencil sharpening, tissues, etc.) Once seated, check the bellwork assignment on the board again and begin your work. You may also use this time to briefly speak with the teacher to check your grade, schedule an appointment to make up a test or get extra help. Do not wait for the bell to ring or for the teacher to signal you to get to work. Seating Seats are assigned by the teacher. Seating assignments may only be changed at the teacher’s discretion. Bellwork Every class session will begin with bellwork. This assignment will always be found on the dry erase board at the front of the classroom. Any handouts or books that you will need on a given day will be addressed in the bellwork instructions. Bellwork is REQUIRED. Coming to Attention Group and independent work will take place often in this classroom. At times, the teacher will need to quiet the class. When the teacher raises her hand, you are expected to stop your conversation or work, look at the teacher and raise your hand as well. Wait for the teacher’s instructions or comments. I. Leaving the Classroom / Hall Passes Leaving the room to visit the restroom, locker or other locations is permitted only in emergencies. A pass is needed for leaving the class. Do not ask to use the restroom or to go to your locker before class begins; just go before you get to class. A maximum of three passes is permitted per quarter. Each pass is recorded, so use them wisely. Once three have been used, there will be no more. J. Class Dismissal The bell does not dismiss the class, the teacher does. Do not pack your things or leave you seats until you are dismissed by the teacher. K. Off Limit Areas Students should never be in the teacher’s seat(s), behind the teacher’s desk or on the teacher’s computer at any time. Students are forbidden to enter the English Commons area without the teacher’s permission. L. Classroom Interruptions The teacher will answer the door and the phone unless a student is asked to do so. NO COMMENTS to visitors – continue working. If the teacher is speaking with someone or is on the phone this does not give the students permission to talk or leave seats. Remain quiet and be respectful. Continue working, if applicable. When announcements are made, become quiet and listen. M. Assignment Protocol Please use only loose leaf notebook paper or perforated paper that can be removed from a notebook without fringe. Label all class assignments in the upper right hand corner of the paper as follows: Full Name Kay Hedrick Complete Date 08/13/09 or Aug. 13, 2009 Period 1st Name of Assignment Analytical Essay or Grammar, pg. 75, Ex. 1 N. In Teacher’s Absence Behave the way you know you should. O. Phone Usage Cell phones are to be place face down on the corner of your desk at the beginning of each class. 1. Cell phones should never be heard ringing or vibrating during class. Please turn your phone off at the beginning of the class, unless otherwise advised. 2. Do not send or read text messages during class. 3. If, as a result of a family emergency, you are expecting a truly important call during a class, inform the instructor of this fact in advance, set the cell phone to the vibrate mode. If a call does come in, excuse yourself as unobtrusively as possible to take the call. Bear in mind that taking calls during class must not become routine; it is acceptable only during legitimate emergencies. 4. The instructor will advise students as to the placement of cell phones during summative assessments. 5. Violation of stated policy are as follows: a. First Incident – Verbal Warning b. Second Incident - The phone will be confiscated for the remainder of the class period to be returned to the student at the dismissal of class. The student will be required to stay after class to complete c. Third Incident – The phone will be confiscated and sent to the administrative office. The student will be required to complete an Action Plan in which he or she will determine how they intend to correct the problem. A parent will be required to retrieve the student’s phone from the office after school hours. d. Fourth and Consequent Incidences – The phone will be confiscated and sent to the administrative office. A parent/guardian will be required to retrieve the student’s phone from the Rowan County Board of Education. P. Grade Inquiries If you are concerned about how you are doing in class, do not approach the teacher during class time. Before school, after school, at break or before or after class are suggested as times to address this issue. Q. Keep the Classroom Clean It is expected that you help keep the classroom clean. It’s easiest not to create a mess. Please use the trashcan to dispose of litter, NOT the floor. Throw gum in the trash if you no longer want it.
