TheNationalInstitutesofHealth(NIH)awardedOMSIfundingduringthespringof2011
tocreatea2,000sq.ft.bilingual(English/Spanish)travelingexhibitionexploringcurrent
researchonthehumanmicrobiomeandtheimpactofourresidentmicroorganismson
ourhealth.TheexhibitionwasdevelopedwiththesupportoftheJ.CraigVenter
Instituteandothernationalexpertsinmicrobiomeresearch.Moreinformationabout

ZooinYouProjectGoals
1. Educatemuseumvisitorsandprogramparticipantsaboutwhatthehuman
microbiomeis,andengagetheircuriosityandcreativityabouttheirownuniqueand
personalmicrobiomes.
2. Tobuildawarenessofcurrentresearchonthehumanmicrobiomeandtheimpactsof
themicrobiomeonourpersonalhealthanddisease.
DesignandMethods
Asummativeevaluationwasconductedtogatherinformationabouttheextenttowhich
theprojectwasachievingitsgoalsofengagingthepublicaroundthehuman
microbiome,microbes,andtheresearchbeingdoneinthisarea.Amultiplemixed
methodsapproachwasusedtogatherinformationabouttheproject,including:1)a
generalvisitorstudywithvisitorstoZooinYouatOMSIinPortland,Oregonand
ScienceWorksinAshland,Oregon(n=120);2)aFamilyScienceNightstudyfocusedon
Spanish-speakingvisitors(n=43);and3)aScienceCaféstudyduringaneveningprogram
(n=142).Utilizingdifferentapproachesandmethodswithdifferentaudiencesallowed
forawiderunderstandingofhowtheZooinYouexhibitionwasreachingaudiencesat
differentsitesandindifferentcircumstances.
MainFindings
Engagementwiththeexhibition–TimespentinZooinYouvariedabitbyinstitution.
MediantimespentatOMSIwas7minutes55seconds,whileitwasslightlylongerat
ScienceWorksat15minutes0seconds.VisitorsatScienceWorksonaveragestoppedat
twomoreexhibitelements(8.3)comparedtoOMSIvisitors(6.0).Itislikelythatthebig
sizedifferenceintheinstitutionsandpossiblylocationoftheexhibitionplayedapart:
thereweremanymoreexhibitionstovisitatOMSIcomparedtoScienceWorks,andZoo
inYouwasmoresetoffinitsownspaceatScienceWorks.Therewere,however,quitea
fewsimilaritiesinhowvisitorsengagedtheexhibition.Ofthetopfiveexhibitelements

engagedin,fourwerethesameacrossbothlocations:HandWashing,MarbleMaze,
WeatherReport,andUndertheLens.Whenaskedwhichexhibitelementsworkedbest
forthewholegroup,whichwasintergenerational,allofthetopfivespecificexhibit
elementsmentionedwerethesameforbothlocations:HandWashing,DNAPuzzle,
MarbleMaze,WeatherReport,andHowTiny.Thisshowsthattheintentionofdesigning
exhibitionsthatcouldappealtovaryingaudiencesindifferentlocationshassome
consistencyinwhatgroupsfindappealingandengaging.
AwarenessandUnderstanding–Whenaskedwhattheylearnedfromtheexhibition,
visitorsweremostlikelytoreferenceaspecificexhibitelementorexhibitionconcept,or
thesizeandnumberofmicrobes.Somevisitorsdidtalkaboutthefactthat
microbes/bacteria/virusescouldbebothgoodandbadforhumans,whereaspriorto
visitingtheexhibitiontheyhadonlythoughttheycouldbebad.Anotheriteminquired
aboutthemainideaoftheexhibition,andthemostcommonresponseshadtodowith
learningaboutmicrobesingeneral,showinghowthehumanbodyworked,microbes
canbegoodandbad,andhowtostayhealthy.Intermsofmentioningspecific
exhibitionareasthatcommunicatedthemainmessages,visitorsatbothinstitutions
mentionedtheHandWashingandHowTinyexhibitelementsasgoodcommunication
toolsofthemainideasoftheexhibition.VisitorssaidtheUndertheLens,Weather
Report,andMVPPuzzlealsodidagoodjobcommunicatingthemainmessages.
TheScienceCaféeventwasheldindependentoftheexhibitionandwasmoreofa
presentation;however,italsohadsuccessinengagingpeoplearoundthecontent.More
thanonequarterofparticipantsreferencedspecificinformationfromthepresentation
whenaskedwhattheylearnedduringtheScienceCaféevent,andalmostonefifthof
participantssaidtheylearnedaboutthehumanmicrobiomeingeneral.
TheTerm“HumanMicrobiome”–Theprojectteamwasinterestedintheextentto
whichvisitorstotheexhibitionwereawareofthespecificterm“humanmicrobiome”
andwhatitmeantrelativetotheexhibitelementsandcontent.However,manyofthe
generalvisitorsatbothlocationssaidtheydidnotspecificallyrememberseeingthe
termintheexhibition;thosewhodidsaytheysawitoftenhadatoughtimedescribing
itaccuratelyandindetail.However,asmentionedabovemanyofthevisitorsgainedan
understandingofthemainmessagesoftheexhibition:howthehumanbodyworks,
whatmicrobesare,andthatmicrobescanbegoodandbad.Soanylackofnoticingor
understandingthisspecifictermdidnotinterferewiththeoverallexhibitiongoals.
BilingualNatureoftheExhibition–ForvisitorstoZooinYourecruitedduringregular
visitinghours,therewerenotverymanywhospokeSpanishonaregularbasis.Assuch,
theydidnotneedtoengagewiththebilingualSpanish/Englishtext.Still,the
overwhelmingmajorityofvisitorstoZooinYousaidhavingabilingualexhibition
enhancedormadenodifferencetotheirexperience,whichisimportantgiventhat
someinstitutionshaveexpressedconcernthatdoublingthetextwouldoverwhelmnonSpanishspeakers.

FortheSpanish-speakinggroupsvisitingduringtheFamilyScienceNightevent,the
bilingualtexthadalargepositiveimpactontheirvisittoZooinYou,mainlybecause
manymembersofthegroupneededSpanishtofullyexperiencetheexhibition.This
allowedthemtoengageintheirnativetongue,knowwhattodoatthevariousexhibit
elements,andmorefullyunderstandthecontentandlearnmore.Almostthreequarters
saidthemuseumhavingtheexhibitioninSpanishchangedhowtheyfeltaboutOMSI.
MorethanthreequarterssaidtheywerelikelytoreturntoOMSIatadifferenttime.
Discussion
Thissectionisadiscussionofthemainfindings,theirsignificance,andsomediscussion
ofhowtheyrelatetofindingselsewhereinthefield.Thissectionseekstoaddcontextto
thefindingsthemselves,aswellashowonemaythinkaboutthefindingsastheyrelate
toeachotherandthefieldingeneral.
Intermsofengagementwiththeexhibitionthemostobviousdifferencewasthatstay
timewasdifferentatthetwoinstitutionswithvisitorsspendingmoretimeinthe
exhibitionatScienceWorks,thesmallerinstitution.Thisisacommontrendinthe
museumworld,wherevisitors’staytimeisdrivenbytryingtomaximizetheirtimeby
splittingavisitupaccordingtowhatthereistoseeanddo.Thisapproachoftakinginto
accounthowmuchthereistodocandrivehowlongpeoplespendinaparticulararea,
sinceiftheywantto“seeitall”thentheysplitupthetimebetweenthevarious
exhibitions.Thelocationoftheexhibitionmayhavealsohadsomethingtodowithstay
time:atOMSI,ZooinYouwasonthesecondfloorandinalargerroomwithmorethan
oneexhibitionalongsideit(i.e.,theNanotechexhibitionononesideandthePrenatal
Displayonanother).AtScienceWorksitwasinaseparateroomattheendofthe
museum,whereitwasinmoreofa“pocket”area,whereyouwalkedthroughone
exhibition,thenenteredaroomthatonlyhadZooinYouinit.Therefore,therewasless
flowinandoutoftheexhibitionatScienceWorksthanatOMSI.
Withthelongerstaytimeitwasalsonotsurprisingthatpeopleengagedinacouple
moreexhibitelementsatScienceWorkscomparedtoOMSI.However,wecannotknow
whetherpeopleinthatlocationwenttomoreexhibitselementsbecausetheyspent
moretimeintheexhibition,whethertheyspentmoretimebecausetheywenttomore
exhibitselements,orwhethertheysawmoreelementsbecausetherewerefewertotal
elementsinthemuseum.Oftentimes,weassumethatalongerstaytimeisbetter,andit
iscertainlytruethatyoucandomoreifyoustaylonger,butthatdoesnotnecessarily
meanthatyouwillexperiencemoreexhibitelements.Thereseemstobeazerosum
factorintermsoftheamountoftimepeoplewillstay;ifyouaddmorecomponents
thenvisitorstendtobemoreselectiveaboutwhattheyvisit,theytendnottoaddto
theirtotalvisittimesimplybecausethereismoretosee.Theaveragetotalvisittimefor
amuseumisaround2to3hours.Thereareexceptions,ofcourse,butRounds(1994)

talkedabouttheforagingbehaviorofvisitors(ratherthanseeingeverything)beinga
veryeffectiveapproachbecausepeoplespendtimeengagingincomponentstheyfind
inherentlyinteresting,andcanfocusonfewerexperiencesinmoredepth.
Lookingatthetypesofelementsthatweremostengaging,thefactthatmanyofthe
sameexhibitelementswerethemostpopularatbothsitessuggeststhatthereisan
inherentpatterninthekindsofelementsvisitorsfindengaginginZooinYou.Manyof
theelementshadcomponentsthatwerebothsimilaranduniqueatthesametime.For
example,theHandWashingelementwasaboutsomethingwehopefullydoeveryday,
yetpresentedtheuniquecontentabouttheamountofbacteriathatremaininavisual
mannerthatwedon’tnormallysee.Thisexhibitcomponentalsoseemedtobepopular
forparentsasameansofreinforcingsomethingtheyarefrequentlyaskingtheir
child(ren)todo.ApopularexhibitliketheMarbleMazehadahands-oncomponentofa
pinballmachinegamethatmanyarefamiliarwith,butwithcontentwasunique.The
kindsofexhibitsthatwerepopulartendedtobeonesthatwerehands-on,andeither
offeredfamiliarexperiencesorcontent(marbles,washinghands,puzzles)oroffereda
uniqueexperience(“doing”theweather,seeingrelativesizebymovingalever).Exhibit
designersanddevelopershavebeenfocusedonfindingabalancebetweenaprior
knowledgeandnewcontentforquitesometime,withthegoalofmakingita
worthwhileexperience.
While7ofthe14exhibitelementsatOMSIhadastaytimeofaminuteorlonger,this
wastruefor9ofthe14elementsatScienceWorks.Astaytimeofaminutewouldallow
foradecentamounttoengagewithanexperience.ForZooinYouitseemsthatif
peoplestoptheyaredecidingtospendarelativelydecentamountoftimeatthat
exhibitelement;theyarenotjustbrowsingbutengaging.Giventimeconstraints,we
werenotabletoconducttrackingstudiesduringtheFamilyScienceNightStudy,butit
wouldalsobeinterestingtoseewhetherthereweresimilarpatternsofbehaviorsfor
groupsthatareusingtheavailablebilingualinterpretation.
Asmentionedinthefindingssections,thereisampleevidencethatvisitorswere
learningduringtheexperience.Visitorsseemedtogettheideathatwehavemicrobes
inourbodies,theyaresmall,therearealotofthem,andthereisaninteraction
betweenourbodyandthesemicrobesthatcanbebothpositiveandnegative.The
approachofusinghands-onexperiencesasawayofengagingdidwork,especiallywhen
visitorsmadesomekindofconnectionwithorexpandeduponwhattheyalreadyknew.
Fewergeneralvisitorssaidtheysawtheterm“humanmicrobiome”intheexhibitionat
OMSI,comparedtovisitorstoScienceWorksorparticipantsduringtheOMSIFamily
ScienceNight.Evenwhilepeoplesaidtheysawtheterm,whenindividualswhodidsee
itwereaskedwhatstoodoutforthemaboutthetermtheyhadamoredifficulttime
describingwhatitwas.Thisdoesnotmeantheyweren’tabletorecallspecificfacts
withinthetopic,theyjusthadahardertimediscussingwhatthehumanmicrobiome
wasdefinedas.

Whentalkingaboutwhattheyspecificallylearned,participantstendedtoeitherstay
verygeneralintheirstatementsortalkaboutspecificexhibitelements.Forexample,
whenaskedaboutwhatthemainideawasparticipantsmostfrequentlymentioned
microbesingeneral,howthebodyworks,andbeinghealthy(although,tobefair,the
itemdidaskforthemainideaandnotspecifics).Infact,thebeinghealthymessagewas
onethatseemedtocomethrough,notonlybecauseofthecontentbutalsobecause
healthissomethingeveryonecanrelatetoandisconcernedabout.Onerelatedidea
thatseemedtogetthroughwasthatmicrobes/viruses/bacteriawerenotonlybadfor
youbutcouldhaveapositiveeffect.Whilesomepeoplehadmoreextensiveknowledge
ofthetopicbecauseofoccupationsorinterests,thiswassurprisingtomanyindividuals
sincewehavebeentaughtthatgermsarebad.Additionally,themessageaboutthe
importanceofmicrobesseemedtocomethrough,thoughtheuniquenessandconstant
stateofchangeofone’sownmicrobiome(oneofthemainideas)wasnotmentionedas
frequentlybyvisitors.Asmentioned,thereweremanyideasthatpeoplecouldrecall
fromspecificcontentsovisitorsdoseemtobegettingbothgeneralinformationabout
thehumanmicrobiomeacrosstheexhibition,aswellasspecificpiecestheypickedupat
individualexhibitcomponents.Theexhibitdoesseemtohaveachievedtheright
balanceinprovidingengagingexperiencesaroundinterestingorrelevantcontentthat
wasmemorableandinformativeforvisitors.
Ingeneral,theSpanish-speakingvisitorsfoundthebilingualinterpretationtobevery
helpful,whilealmostasimportantlythenon-Spanishspeakingvisitorssaidthatitdid
notdetractfromtheirexperienceinZooinYou.Whenaskedwhyitenhancedtheirvisit,
peopletalkedabouthowtheyunderstandorlearnbetterintheirownlanguage,
someoneintheirgroupdoesn’tspeakEnglish,orbecausetheirfirstlanguageisSpanish.
ThefactthathavingthecontentinSpanishchangedhowthelargemajorityofSpanishspeakingvisitorsfeltaboutOMSIisnotsurprising,giventhatitmeanttheycouldengage
inthecontentwithmoreease.Whilethisstudydidnotdelvedeeplyintothereasons
whyhavingbilingualinterpretationwouldenhancetheexperienceofSpanish-speaking
groups,anNSFresearchstudyhasconfirmedthattherearemanypositiveaffordances
forbilingualgroupswhenyouprovidecontentinbothSpanishandEnglish.See

important,thestudyshowedthataccessingcontentwaslessaboutsimply
understandingandwasmoreoftenawaytofacilitatetheexperienceforothersornot
to“holdback”therestofthegroup.IncludingSpanishalsoprovidedawaytoconnectto
theirculturethroughlanguage,orpracticethelanguagetheywerelesscomfortable
withinasafeenvironment.Thislastpointisinteresting,inthatsecondorthird
generationLatinos/HispanicsareoftenEnglishonlyorEnglishdominant,somonolingual
Spanish-speakingparentsseehavinginterpretationinbothlanguagesasawayfortheir
childrentopracticeorlearnSpanish.IntheNSFstudy,therewasalsoevidencethatit
madethemfeelmorecomfortable,enjoythevisitmore,andfeelmorevaluedbythe

institution.ThestudywasalsohighlightedinanissueofthejournalMuseumsandSocial
Issues(Volume10,Issue1)thatlookedatredefiningmultilingualisminmuseumsand
includesotherrelatedarticles:http://www.maneyonline.com/toc/msi/10/1.
Thispointthatnon-Spanishspeakerswereeithernotaffectedbyorpositivelyaffected
bytheinclusionofSpanishinterpretationisanimportantone.Whenthetopicof
bilingualtextcomesupinthemuseumfieldthereisusuallyacommentthatnonSpanishspeakerswillbevisuallyconfusedoroverwhelmedbytheamountoftextifit
weredoubled(orslightlymorethandoubled,giventhatSpanishtendstotakeslightly
morecharactersthanitsEnglishcounterpart).Infact,theoverwhelmingmajorityof
non-Spanishspeakersinthisstudysaiditeithermadenodifference,meaningtheycan
justignoreit,orthatitactuallyenhancedtheirexperience.Alittlemorethan1outof5
non-regularSpanishspeakerssaiditenhancedtheirexperience,eitherbecausetheyhad
someknowledgeofSpanishalreadyorthatitwouldbebeneficialforthosewhodid
speakSpanish.Theveryfewpeoplewhosaiditdetractedfromtheirexperience
commentedonthefactthatsomeofthesubtitlesonscreensshoweduponlyin
Spanish,andtheywerenotsureifEnglishwereavailableorhowtoswitchit.These
commentswerelessaboutthepresenceofSpanishintheexhibit,andmoreabouthow
itwasincluded.Thesefindingsechothosepreviouslyfoundinsomeunpublished
studies;infact,thereisprettymuchonlyanecdotalevidenceaboutthenegativeimpact
onthevisitorexperiencewhentextispresentedinmultiplelanguages,andthesetend
tobeaverysmallnumberofcommentsfromafewindividuals.Muchofhowvisitors
willrespondtomultilinguallabelsdependsonhowtheyarecreatedanddesigned,and
theNanotechnologyNSF-fundedprojectcreatedabilingualdesignguidethatisvery
helpful:seethemainNISENetworksiteathttp://www.nisetnet.org(thedirectlinkto
theguideisinReferencessectionofthisreport).
Overall,theZooinYouexhibitiondidagoodjobofengagingvisitorsinthemaintopics
aboutthehumanmicrobiome,withvisitorsbuildingonwhattheyalreadyknewand

theHumanMicrobiomethroughaScienceEducationPartnershipAward(SEPA)grant(1
R25RR032210-01).OMSIpartneredwithhumanmicrobiomeresearchersattheJ.Craig
VenterInstitute(JCVI)todevelopa2,000sq.ft.bilingual(English/Spanish)traveling
exhibition,aswellaspublicprogrammingandawebsiteexploringcurrentresearchon
thehumanmicrobiomeandtheimpactofourresidentmicroorganismsonourhealth.
Theexhibitionadvisoryteamincludedadditionalexpertsonthetopicsofmicrobes,
publichealth,andinformalscienceeducationtechniques.Moreinformationaboutthe

OMSIdesignedthisexhibitiontobeplayful,colorful,andattractive.Thehuman

ToexaminetheexhibitioncomponentswithgeneralvisitorsatOMSIandScienceWorks
(inAshland,Oregon),visitorswererecruitedattheentranceoftheexhibitionandasked
toparticipateinthestudy.Thosewhoagreedwerefirstobservedintheexhibition,and
theninterviewedabouttheirvisitafterwards.Thetargetaudienceconsistedofgeneral
visitorgroupswithchildreningrades4-12,includingSpanish-speakinggroups(materials
wereavailableinEnglishandSpanish).Attheendoftheinterview,visitorgroupswere
askedtocompleteashortsurveyconsistingprimarilyofdemographicquestions.
EvaluationinstrumentsuseinOMSIandScienceWorkswereessentiallythesame;the
nameofinstitutionsandthemapsusedfortimingandtrackingaretheexceptions(see
AppendicesBandCfortheinstruments).SinceScienceWorksrepresentsthetypeof
museum–insize,andvisitorattendance–thatmightrenttheZooinYoutraveling
exhibition,thehopewasthatinformationgatheredatScienceWorkswouldhelppainta
pictureofthevisitorexperience,includingtimeattendingtheexhibitionandaudience
demographics,atanothersciencecenter.Thiswouldbehelpfulwhentalkingtoother

Theatre,atOMSI.Itwasoriginallyexpectedthatthisportionoftheevaluationwould
includeonlyadults(18yearsandolder),howevertherewasasmallpercentageof
participantswhoattendedtheScienceCaféeventwhowereundertheageof18years
old.OMSIstaffdistributedsurveysforparticipantstocomplete.Giventhedurationof
theeventandtheneedtoreachmanyparticipantsatonce,participantsweregivenpenand-papersurveys.Ashortsurveywasthemostsuccessfulwaytocollectalarger
numberofsurveysattheevent.Theoriginalgoalwastocollect50to75surveys,
howeverthenumberofparticipantsinattendanceexceededtheestimatedattendance

DatacollectionforthegeneralvisitorstudyatOMSIwasconductedoverfivedays,from
July21st,2015throughJuly25th,2015.VisitorswereinterceptedastheyenteredtheZoo
inYouexhibitionandaskedtoparticipateinthestudy.Anyindividualwhodeclinedto
participateinthestudywasnotobservedandwasnotaskedtoparticipateinan
interviewattheendoftheirvisit.Therewereapproximately15refusalstoparticipatein
thestudy.
Datacollectorsencouragedvisitorstoexploretheexhibitioninthewaytheynormally
would,thenreturntothedatacollectorattheendoftheirtimeintheexhibition.During
thevisit,datacollectorsobservedandtrackedthemainvisitorandtheirgroup,notingat
whichexhibitelementstheystopped,forhowlong,andwhetheranymemberofthe
groupparticipatedinahands-onactivitywithintheexhibition.Attheendofthevisit,
datacollectorsconductedashortinterviewwiththemainvisitor,includinganyother
membersofthegroupwhochosetoparticipateintheinterview.
Morethantwothirdsofparticipants(71%)inthegeneralvisitorstudyatOMSIwere
female,comparedtojustoveraquarter(29%)male(seeTable1).Mostgeneralvisitors
atOMSIrangedbetween31and50yearsold,withthelargestmajority(33%)between
31and40yearsold.Alongwiththe90individualswhocompletedaninterview,281
individualstouredtheexhibitioninthegroupswiththesurveyparticipants.SeeTable1
forabreakdownoftheagesofothergeneralvisitorstoOMSI.Mostoftheother
individualsvisitingOMSI(69%)wereundertheageof18yearsold.Halfofgeneral
visitorstoOMSIlivedinOregon.Almostathirdofvisitors(32%)livedinthewestern
UnitedStates,whileasmallerpercentageofvisitors(14%)livedinotherpartsofthe
UnitedStatesorwereinternationalvisitors.
MorethanthreequartersofthegeneralvisitorparticipantsatOMSIidentifiedasWhite.
Participantswereinvitedtowriteabetterdescriptionoftheirracialidentityinthe

withthe30individualswhocompletedaninterview,115individualsattendedthevisitin
thegroupswiththesurveyparticipants.SeeTable3forabreakdownoftheagesof
othergeneralvisitorstoScienceWorks.Mostoftheotherindividualsvisiting
ScienceWorks(76%)wereundertheageof18yearsold.Morethanthreequartersof
generalvisitorstoScienceWorks(77%)livedinOregon.Theothergeneralvisitors
interviewedatScienceWorks(23%)livedinthewesternUnitedStates.
ThemajorityofgeneralvisitorstoScienceWorks(76%)identifiedasWhite.Asmaller
percentageofvisitorsidentifiedasAsian(3%),AfricanAmerican/Black(3%),and
AmericanIndian/AlaskaNative(3%).Morethan10%ofScienceWorksvisitorschosethe

thatprovidesfamilyservicessuchascounseling,childservices,andparenteducational
servicestofamiliesinneedofthePortlandMetroarea.OMSIstaffworkedcloselywitha
programcoordinatorwithMFStorecruitHispanic/Latinofamiliesforthisevent.Data
collectionoccurredduringFamilyScienceNightatOMSI,aspecialeventheldatOMSIon
July20,2015.Attendeeswereinterceptedduringtheirvisitandaskedtoparticipatein
aninterview.Bilingualdatacollectorswereemployed,andeachdatacollector
conductedinterviewsinEnglishand/orSpanishwithSpanish-speakingvisitors(visitors
chosethelanguagetheypreferred).
Almostnineoutof10(85%)ofthesurveyparticipantswerefemale,while16%were
male(seeTable25).Intermsoftheage,morethanhalfoftheparticipants(53%)were
from31to40yearsold,another19%werebetween26and30years,andanother12%
between41and50yearsold.Asecondage-relateditemaskedabouttheagesofthe
otherpeopleintheirgroups.AscanbeseeninTable25manyofthoseaccompanying
theadultswerechildren:30%were0to5,another30%were6to11,and11%were12
to18yearsold.Itisimportanttonotethatforthiseventonlygroupswithchildrenin
thetargetagerangewererecruited,sothisresultisnotsurprising.Someofthemdid
visitwithotheradults,as39%oftheothermemberswereadults19yearsandolder.
Morethan90%ofparticipantsinOMSIFamilyScienceNightlivedinOregon.Avery

DatafortheScienceCaféstudywascollectedonTuesday,August18,2015.Onthenight
ofdatacollectionforthisstudy,theguestspeakerwasHernanLorenzioftheJ.Craig
VenterInstitute,whowasascienceadvisorfortheZooinYouproject.Histalkfocused
onthehumanmicrobiome,inconnectiontotheZooinYouexhibitionthatwason
displayatOMSI.ThepresentationtookplaceattheEmpiricalTheaterontheOMSI
museumcampus.Attendancewasimpressivelyhigh,witheveryseatinthe300-personcapacityvenuefilled.
IndividualsparticipatingintheScienceCaféeventsweregivenasurveyuponentryto
theevent,whichincludedatableonwhichtoscoretheirtriviagameandthequestions
includedinthesurvey.Playerswereaskedtocompletethesurveybeforeleavingthe
event.
ParticipantsintheScienceCaféstudyhadamostlyevensplitbetweengenders(53%
male,46%female),withoneparticipantwritingintheterm“fluid”asaresponsetothe
openendedquestion(seeTable35).Thelargemajorityofparticipantswereoverthe
ageof21yearsold.Surprisingly,over40%ofparticipantsinScienceCaféwereover61
yearsold.Weoftenassumethattrivianightsaredesignedforyoungadultswhoare
likelytolookforsocialnightlifeexperiences,butitseemsasthoughScienceCaféis
attractingamuchwiderrangeofages.Morethanthreequartersofparticipantsin
ScienceCafé(91%)livedinOregon.Asmallpercentageofparticipants(9%)camefrom
otherwesternstates,mostlyfromnearbyVancouver,Washington.
