The ILS was designed to identify a preferred style of learning which includes perception, acquisition, processing,
and retention of information.
*If your score falls between 1-3, you are fairly well balanced on the two dimensions of that scale.
*If your score falls between 5-7, you have a moderate preference for one dimension of the scale. You will learn
more easily in a teaching environment which favors that dimension.
*If your score is between 9-11, you have a very strong preference for one dimension of the scale. You may have
difficulty learning in an environment which does not support that preference.
The Index of Learning Styles is an instrument used to assess preferences on four dimensions (active/reflective,
sensing/intuitive, visual/verbal, and sequential/global) of a learning style model formulated by Richard M. Felder
and Linda K. Silverman. The instrument is being developed by Barbara A. Soloman and Richard M. Felder of North
Carolina State University.
