Career Services Peer Advisor
BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY:
Help students who visit Career Services achieve career success by providing one-to-one resume advising, facilitating
practice interviews, and assisting with various outreach activities and events. Increase the Center’s visibility and impact
on campus by speaking to student groups, assisting Career Services staff, and completing projects with Center staff
members.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
 Provide mentoring and support for peers, such as (but not limited to):
o Resume and cover letter creation and revision
o Interview preparation and practice
o Career Fair preparation and networking advice
o Assistance with the job search and graduate school processes
o Share insights about personal work experiences
 Assist and co-facilitate workshops on topics such as resumes, cover letters, interviewing, and internships.
 Provide backup coverage at the front desk; assist with greeting visitors; answer and direct phone calls, as needed.
 Help out with special events such as career fairs, campus outreach activities such as staffing informational tables at
events.
 Assist Center staff with special projects such as recruiting employer panelists, contributing to new workshops/
outreach, designing on-line outreach ideas, etc.
 Complete assigned administrative tasks such as data entry, word processing, photocopying, filing, processing mail,
and occasionally run errands on Rose campus.
 Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
 Junior/Senior or graduate student.
 Have completed an internship in field of study.
 GPA of 3.0 or above.
 Genuine interest in helping fellow students achieve success.
 Ability to communicate and connect with students from diverse backgrounds using a friendly and courteous attitude –
both in one-to-one settings and group settings.
 Comfortable learning career-related information and presenting about it to groups of students.
 Capacity for tact, diplomacy, discretion, and confidentiality.
 Detail-oriented and conscientious when completing tasks.
 Committed to showing up for assigned shifts; reliable and dependable.
 Proven leadership, advising, or tutoring experience a plus.
EXPECTATIONS:
 The Peer Advisor will not be able to study during scheduled office hours; time will be used to meet required duties
and to develop specific competencies.
 The Peer Advisor will be expected to dress in a para-professional manner (no sweatpants, shorts, torn jeans, etc).
 Must be available 5- 10 hours per week - The Peer Advisor’s class schedule will be considered when establishing
work hours at the Center.
 The prime time needed for direct service to clients is M – F, 10:00 – 4:30 – arriving on time and ready to work!
 Attendance at day-long training in late August prior to fall quarter term is required.
 Appointment is for the 2014-2015 academic year.
