FAQ’s about the 6th grade band What kinds of band classes are offered at the 6th grade level? Our 6th grade band classes are designed for students who have never played an instrument before. We offer instruction on flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, french horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, and percussion instruments. Does the student supply the instrument for participation in band? Generally, yes. We recommend that you rent a good quality instrument for your child. A parent meeting and rental program will be held at RCMS in late August through the Don Wilson Music Company of Lexington, Kentucky. The instruments are rented on a rent to own basis and repairs are covered as part of the rental process. The rent is between $36 and $46 per month, depending on the type of instrument. In addition, a limited number of instruments are available for use from the school. A $40 usage fee is assessed for school instruments to help cover maintenance and repair costs. Some people elect to purchase an instrument for their child. If you intend to do so, please contact Mr. Diedrichsen and discuss the brand and model that you considering. Some brands of cheaper instruments will be incompatible with the other instruments in the band because of different tuning and function. Many times these brands will not have readily available replacement parts, which makes repair uneconomical. We understand that there are costs involved with being a member of a band program. However, we would not want a student not participating in band because he/she was worried about being able to afford it. There is assistance available at RCMS to make band a possibility for everyone. What criteria are used in selecting an instrument for the beginning band student? During the first few weeks of school the band directors will be evaluating the interests and physical attributes of each student (size of hands, shape of lips, braces, etc.) and recommend a suitable instrument for beginning instruction. Are private lessons available for band students? Yes. We would like every student to participate in private lessons. Mr. Diedrichsen or Mr. Christie can get you in contact with a private lesson instructor. Parents schedule their children’s lessons with their private teacher directly. The cost of such lessons varies depending on the teacher. If you are interested in your child taking private lessons please speak with the band director as soon as possible. How much after-school time is involved with being in band? At the beginning level, after-school time only involves two concerts and two rehearsals (to combine the band classes). The students will perform their first concert on December 12th, at 7:00 p.m. in the RCMS gym. As a student continues with band throughout middle and high school, more aspects of the program will be offered to them, but the required amount of after school time does not increase significantly. How much practice time is expected of beginning band students? At first, beginners are expected to practice 10-15 minutes a day (in two or three 5-7 minute sessions). As they progress through the year, students will be expected to practice 20-30 minutes a day to accomplish our group and individual goals. What kinds of performances are involved for beginning band students? Performances for our beginners are generally limited to two or three concerts. At this level, we concentrate on developing good fundamental instrumental skills. We do provide the students with many opportunities to “show off” their progress in class settings. How many students are involved in the beginner band program? Each year we start approximately 70-90 new students in our beginner band classes. They are divided into two class which during 1st or 2nd period for sixth graders. What process does a student follow to be in band? Students will sign up for band during the first week of school at RCMS. There will be a 6th grade band parent meeting on August 29th in the middle school cafeteria at 6:30 p.m. A representative from Don Wilson Music will have instruments available for rental and Mr. Diedrichsen will distribute a limited number of school-owned instruments to those who decide not to rent an instrument.
