 WINTERSESSION 2016: FAR385 PRINTMAKING AND BOOK ARTS IN VENICE Join us in Venice this Wintersession to learn about printmaking, artists' books, and letterpress. For two weeks we will be visiting museums, galleries, and print and letterpress shops in and around Venice. Utilizing the studio spaces at the Scuola Internazionale di Grafica, students will be studying printmaking and book forms and applying these techniques to topics and research centered on Venice's rich culture and history to create artists' books and editioned prints. This 3-­‐credit course counts as an art elective, or a printmaking studio for Printmaking concentrations. Prerequisites: FAR 015, 016, ART032 TRAVEL DATES: January 1-­‐15, 2016 APPLICATION DEADLINE: October 15, 2015 COSTS: $2,777.20 -­‐ PA Residents $4,259.50 -­‐ Non-­‐PA Residents (Includes 3 credits of KU tuition and required fees, program fees, housing, studio usage, some museum entry fees, and some transportation within Venice) NOT INCLUDED: Round-­‐trip airfare, individual food expenses and art supplies, International Student Identity Card, passport fee. DEPOSIT: If accepted, a NON-­‐refundable deposit of $200.00 is due with Deposit Form to the Office of Student Accounts (225 Stratton) on October 30, 2015 FINAL PAYMENT DATE: November 6, 2015 TRAVEL: Travel arrangements will be done by Sandy Green at Berkleigh Travel, with a $10 booking fee per student. A block of seats will be reserved so that students may travel together. Round-­‐trip airfare to Venice can range from $1,000-­‐$1,400 based on market fluctuations. ACCOMODATIONS: Students will be housed in an apartment in Campo San Maurizio that belongs to the Scuola Internazionale di Grafica, which will be hosting the program. Students typically are two to a room and there is a complete kitchen and several bathrooms for students to share. Laundry facilities and wifi are provided. The studio facility is a 25 minute walk. DOCUMENTATION: Passports can be obtained by applying at the Kutztown Public Library, 70 Beiber Alley, Kutztown, PA 19530. Passport photos can be taken at CVS. Please note that the procedure for passport application may take up to two months. Passport application fees are currently $110. INSURANCE: All students must have medical insurance with international coverage. For this program students will be required to acquire an International Student Identity Card, that offers a level of medical coverage for illness and injury, medical evacuation and repatriation. ISIC costs $25 and is available at the KU Office of International Admissions, Boxwood House, 484-­‐646-­‐4256. Kutztown University, the Department of Fine Arts and individuals associated with this program in Venice are not responsible for the personal wellbeing of students who choose to participate in the program. Verify with your current medical insurer to find out about international coverage. CODE OF CONDUCT: Students who participate in the program are still governed by Kutztown University rules and regulations as stipulated by the Kutztown University of Pennsylvania Undergraduate Catalog and The Key: Student Handbook. In addition, all US and Italian codes of conduct must be respected. Kutztown University, the Department of Fine Arts, the KU Office of International Studies, the Program Coordinator and Program Instructors are neither responsible, nor liable for the conduct of students. Students participating in the program will also sign a code of conduct specific to the KU Wintersession 2016 Printmaking and Book Arts in Venice program. COURSE OBJECTIVES: Students will create a series of prints that may stand alone or be used as the basis for an artist's book. Students will gain exposure to traditional and non-­‐
traditional book structures and letterpress printing using movable type. Students will see examples of printmaking studios and workshops including the Scuola Internazionale di Grafica and the Tipoteca Italiana. Students will have the opportunity to visit collections, archives, museums and galleries including the Museo Correr, the Querinili Stampalia, Palazzo Fortuny, Palazzo Grassi, Punta della Dogana, the Peggy Guggenheim, Ca'Pesaro, and many others. In addition to an editioned suite of prints or artist's book, students will produce a journal containing both written and visual material documenting their experiences and observations. Students will produce a formal written piece upon their return that contextualizes the experience within their individual academic programs. RATIONALE: Students from a variety of disciplines will benefit from this experience, including those who are working in visual arts, graphic design and communication, art history and printmaking. The emphasis will be to pull from cross-­‐disciplinary pursuits and the experience of the history and culture of Venice with the physical work taking the form of printmaking. Venice is rich with history of printing, publishing and textiles. Aside from many examples of Byzantine and Renaissance artworks and architecture, Venice boasts a wealth of cutting-­‐edge contemporary art including a thriving contemporary art, architecture, and performing arts scene. Students will have the experience of creating contemporary art using historical techniques in the setting of Venice and its fascinating and enlightening confluence of old and new. CLASSES AND EXCURSIONS: Classes will be held at the Scuola Internazionale di Grafica, located in Canareggio from 9:00 am -­‐ 1:00 pm daily except for Saturdays and Sundays. Afternoons will be used for guided or independent excursions to museums, collections, and other sites of interest. Open studio access will be every evening from 7:15 pm -­‐ 10:15 pm. There will be one or two full afternoons available for additional studio time as needed. There will always be a professor or mentor on site with the students during work time.
