Biochemistry Summer Course Designed for Undergraduate and Post-Undergraduate Students The biochemistry summer course at Drexel University College of Medicine was developed in response to major changes in the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT), which were implemented in 2015. This intensive 6-week course is designed for: • Pre-med students • Biology/chemistry majors • Any students who intend to take the MCATs Details The biochemistry summer course is scheduled for June 13 through July 27, 2016. It meets for 2 hours every morning, Monday through Friday, and is taught by the same faculty who teach first year medical students at Drexel University College of Medicine. This one-semester equivalent course covers topics in general biochemistry divided into three parts: fundamentals, metabolism and molecular biology. Each part culminates with an exam. Students are expected to prepare for class by reading the assigned materials. Fundamentals • DNA, RNA and protein structure • Membranes • Enzyme kinetics • Lipids and carbohydrates Metabolism • Glycolysis • Gluconeogenesis • Citric acid cycle • Oxidative phosphorylation • Lipid and amino acid metabolism Molecular Biology • Recombinant DNA • DNA replication and repair • Transcription • Translation and protein processing • Control of gene expression MCAT Changes Starting 2015, MCAT is more comprehensive, has more questions, and includes new topics. Biochemistry is essential MCAT preparation. The MCAT includes a section covering biochemical foundations of living systems.
