Fisheries m anagem ent, m ainly focused on single species, is s h iftin g to an Ecosystem Approach to Management (EAM). Its objective is to sustain healthy ecosystems and the fisheries th ey support. Marine capture fisheries o f the EU Members States are all managed by the Com m on Fisheries Policy (CFP) but fo r each region d iffe re n t regulations may apply. Our study focuses on demersal fisheries in tw o European marine regions w ith d iffe re n t ecosystem and m anagem ent characteristics, the North Sea and the Eastern Mediterranean. Our aim is to develop and use a suite o f d iffe re n t types o f generic indicators applicable to d iffe re n t ecosystems and fisheries, to su pp ort EAM. Flere we review both the ecological com ponents th a t appear to be affected in each region by the fish in g practices th a t ta rg et dem ersal resources. Then, by developing appropriate scenarios using environm ental and socio-econom ic indicators we expect to co ntribu te tow ards building a state o f the art m ethodology in line w ith applying an EAM.
