Quality of pharmaceutical products to a great extent depends up on the quality of
input materials. For this reason selection, qualification, approval and maintenance of
suppliers are crucial to Pharmaceutical industry. The level of controls required in the
process should be proportionate to the risks involved in the source of the material,
manufacturing process, supply chain complexity and the final use to which the
material is put in the medicinal product. Regulatory agencies have assigned a lot of
emphasis on managing quality of suppliers as well as the entire supply chain so that
patients at large are not at risk. Thus supplier management is a GMP, Regulatory and
Business management requirement. Failure to meet these requirements may lead
to product quality failures, customer complaints, product recalls and regulatory
actions.
