FOCUS ON FUNDING News and Notes from the SLCC Office of Institutional Development September 2003 Grant Opportunities Focus on Funding is a newsletter published by the St. Louis Community College Office of Institutional Development. It features external funding opportunities available from federal, state, local and private funding sources, as well as other news. The Fulbright Teacher and Administrator Exchange Program (Council for International Exchange of Scholars) The Fulbright Teacher and Administrator Exchange Program provides opportunities for community college faculty to participate in direct exchanges of positions with colleagues from another country for either six weeks, a semester, or an academic year. Terms and requirements of the award vary by country. Benefits to participating faculty include the opportunity for a career-enhancing experience which allows faculty to gain new perspectives and to be exposed to new teaching methods. Benefits to participating campuses include the opportunity for students to learn foreign languages from Native speakers, and increased global awareness on the part of students. Eligible countries for community college faculty include Argentina, Canada, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Mexico, Norway, Peru, Romania, Slovak Republic, South Africa, Switzerland, and the U.K. Some countries have specific requirements regarding academic disciplines and language fluency. There are also opportunities for administrator exchanges. (Continued from page 1) Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence Program (Council for International Exchange of Scholars) The Fulbright Scholar-in Residence (SIR) program is designed to bring a foreign scholar to a U.S. college or university for one semester or one year. In addition to teaching courses, scholars give campus-wide and community lectures. Numerous community colleges have participated in the SIR program. Preference is given to proposals in the humanities or social sciences, but other fields focusing on international issues will be considered. Institutions may suggest suitable candidates or have the Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES) scholars from a particular country. Faculty and Staff Kudos A number of faculty and staff members have been awarded grants and contracts over the past few months. Project Directors, grant amounts and descriptions for recent awards include: Brian Corpening, Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, $29,120. A grant for the Florissant Valley campus to participate in the Summer Food Service program for the National Youth Sports Program participants. Deadline: November 1, 2003 Rosemary Woolley, Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, $34,620. A grant for the Forest Park campus to participate in the Summer Food Service program for the National Youth Sports Program participants. Sun Microsystems Academic Equipment Grant Program Sun Microsystems donates equipment to eligible organizations who have developed creative projects that address their investment priorities and create partnerships for success. Grants are made on a published quarterly calendar and are for hardware donations only. Grants do not include maintenance, service, or technical support. Mary Luebke, Johnson County Community College/U.S. Department of Education, $1,500. A grant for the Florissant Valley campus to participate in a Regional Interpreter Training Partnership to promote the development of sign language interpreters. Pam McIntyre/Christy Jaeger, Productive Living Board, $99,765. A grant to provide vocational enhancement services to St. Louis County residents with developmental disabilities through the Continuing Education Access Program on the Meramec campus.
