Spring Quarter SRC Pool Hours: Multiple Sclerosis is a chronic neurological disorder that has been found to affect the central nervous system (CNS). Within the CNS, nerve fibers are surrounded by a layered insulation known as Myelin. The role of Myelin is to allow nerve signals to travel properly. With MS, the myelin is destroyed on the brain and spinal cord. This damage inhibits the transmission of messages that communicate a desired action from the brain to other parts of the body. This damage can also cause permanent function loss. The path of this disease can vary greatly from person to person. There are four main types: Relapsing Remitting, Secondary Progressive, Primary Progressive and Progressive Relapsing. The cause of this disease is still unknown, but several contributing factors include environmental, immunologic, viral and genetic. In addition, the symptoms also vary with MS. They range from fatigue and balance problems to depression and vision loss. Active research is currently being done to discover new and improved diseasechanging drugs in addition to combination therapies.
