WHY STUDY ABROAD? Studying in Spain will increase your understanding of its culture and your fluency in the Spanish language. An intensive program such as the one offered by the Universidad de Valladolid will help you gain language skills and multicultural experiences that are beneficial in today's international job market, with 500 million speakers of Spanish, as well as the United States' job market, where the Hispanic population is the fastest-growing minority. Students who successfully complete their experience at the Universidad de Valladolid transfer up to six credits to Kutztown University in courses ranging from Intermediate Spanish (SPA103/SPA104) to upper-level courses. This is an academic endeavor and more—a life-changing experience. ¡Vamos a Valladolid! VALLADOLID, SPAIN In the heart of Old Castile and only a twohour drive from Madrid, the city of Valladolid is an eclectic mix of old and new. Intensive preservation keeps the city's architectural heritage alive, from the 12th century Santa María de la Antigua church to the 19th century city square. Imaginative urban planning makes for easy pedestrian access to services, shopping, and the arts. THE UNIVERSITY OF VALLADOLID Founded in 1293, the Universidad de Valladolid offers 63 degrees at its four main campuses, which are located throughout Spain. The university maintains connections with many foreign institutions of higher learning and has offered Spanish language and culture courses for international students since 1949. The instructors, many of whom have doctoral degrees, are highly trained and routinely participate in continuing education programs. Catering to the needs of international students, the university is committed to small classes that facilitate individualized attention and practice. Language courses are taught at the newly constructed Center for Languages and Continuing Education, which is equipped with the latest technological support for secondlanguage acquisition. The University of Valladolid has extracurricular activities for international students—a film series, access to the gymnasium facilities, and concerts. Language exchanges called intercambios can be arranged between Kutztown and Valladolid students. PROGRAM FORMAT The Kutztown-Valladolid program runs for five weeks. Classes are offered Monday-Friday, four hours per day. Students should plan to arrive at least one day prior to the beginning of classes. ACCOMMODATIONS Living with a Spanish family is an important part of the Kutztown-Valladolid Program. The home-stay experience provides an informal, non-academic setting for language and cultural learning. Students board with families who have been carefully screened by the Universidad de Valladolid's administration. EXCURSIONS Transportation for three field trips is included in the program—to Salamanca, Segovia and Madrid. Touring these historic sites with a guide is an invaluable experience. Most entrance fees are included in the program fee. COSTS Because of the fluctuating exchange rate between the dollar and the euro, the exact cost for the Summer 2016 Kutztown-Valladolíd program is yet to be determined, but should be approximately $2,998 (pending approval by Board of Trustees). This covers tuition, room and board with families, textbook, and transportation to three excursions. Round-trip airfare to Spain, ground transportation in the United States and in Spain, and personal expenditures are additional. TRANSFER OF CREDITS Kutztown University students must complete a Request for Permission to Study at Another College form. Turn in this form with the program application. Students can earn up to six semester hours of transfer credit for a variety of courses that are offered, including Intensive Spanish Language and Culture (intermediate and advanced levels), Intermediate and Advanced Conversation, and Spanish History, Culture, Literature and Art. Exact course correlation will be discussed during information sessions. There are no incompletes. DOCUMENTATION Students must have a valid passport prior to departure.
