COLLEGES: Majors and Program EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS Kutztown University offers the following undergraduate curricula to prepare students for careers: COLLEGE OF BUSINESS MISSION STATEMENT: The Kutztown University College of Business is primarily a teaching institution. Our mission is to serve students from a wide variety of backgrounds, the business community, and other stakeholders of Southeastern Pennsylvania and the surrounding areas. Our undergraduate students obtain, through a challenging learning environment, a comprehensive understanding of business foundations and a thorough preparation in their respective major fields of study. We supplement this with optional profession-based career tracks. Our MBA students develop a strategic understanding of organizations. Our student-oriented faculty lead these efforts and actively contribute to applied and pedagogical scholarship in their respective fields. Accounting — A student in the Accounting major at Kutztown University engages in intensive professional study in financial accounting, cost accounting, tax accounting, and auditing. Students are prepared to pursue careers as certified public accountants, tax accountants, managerial accountants, accounting managers. Finance — The Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a major in Finance requires students to complete advanced study in financial management, investments, investment portfolio management, advanced business statistics, and financial markets. Students are prepared to pursue careers as financial managers, chartered financial analysts, certified financial planners and various other financial careers in corporations, financial institutions and the financial services industry. Leisure and Sport Studies — The Department of Sport Management supports student growth and learning in multiple capacities within the University. Sport Management offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Leisure and Sport Studies designed to prepare students for sport business industry, the health and fitness industry, municipal recreation and/or program supervision, coaching and/or athletic administration. Additionally, the department offers a nationally accredited coaching education curriculum. Further, the department offers the Wellness course (HEA 102) a component of the General Education University Requirements. Management — Students pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with a major in Management are required to complete advanced study in Organization Behavior, Business and Social Environment, and Business Strategy and Policy. They have the opportunity to select from a wide offering of management electives, including Small Business Management, Human Resource Management, Management of Labor Relations, Operations Management, Logistics, Supply Chain Management, and International Management. The degree program also gives students the opportunity to select other business electives to broaden their professional education. Management graduates are prepared to assume leadership roles in a variety of careers and organizations. Marketing — Students who select the Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with a major in Marketing are required to complete advanced study in Marketing Management and Marketing Research. They have the opportunity to select from a variety of marketing electives, including: Personal Selling, Advertising Management, Consumer Behavior, Advertising Campaigns, Sales Management, Marketing Ethics, Retail Management, Service Marketing, Logistics, and International Marketing. The marketing degree program also allows students the opportunity to elect additional College of Business courses. Marketing students are qualified to pursue careers in personal selling, advertising, media buying, market research, retail management, procurement, physical distribution, and other marketing-related positions. COLLEGE OF EDUCATION Elementary Education — This program leads to a Bachelor of Science in Education Degree and prepares students for teaching in Kindergarten through Grade 6. Dual certification programs of study are available in elementary/early childhood education and library science/elementary education. Dual certifications that include elementary education are found in the majors of special education and library science. Field experiences begin early in the program and include observing and teaching at different grade levels in a wide range of urban, suburban, and rural educational settings and organizational structures. Graduates are currently teaching in child care centers, preschool programs, nursery schools, primary schools, elementary schools, and middle schools. Other graduates have continued their preparation at the graduate level to become elementary supervisors, principals, superintendents, college professors, and officials in the state department of education. Continuous review and revision of the elementary curriculum is made to maintain high standards and prepare graduates to meet the educational challenges of the future. Secondary Education — General Education, Academic Specialization and Professional Studies are blended to prepare students for careers as secondary education teachers. The program leads to a Bachelor of Science in Education and Pennsylvania teacher certification which qualifies the graduate to teach in a middle, junior high or senior high school. (Students seeking foreign language certification will be certified K-12.) Secondary Education majors may concentrate in one or a combination of the following areas of certification: Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Space Science, General Science, Physics, Physics and Mathematics (dual), Mathematics, German, Spanish, English, Social Studies. Special Education — This curriculum leads to the degree of Bachelor of Science in Education and prepares teacher candidates to teach students with mentally and/or physically handicapping conditions or visual impairments - kindergarten through grade 12. A combination of courses in General Education, Professional Education, Elementary Education and Special Education lead to a dual certification in both Elementary and Special Education. It should be noted that students must be eligible for dual certification in order to graduate. *Degree requirements subject to change as determined by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Library Science — This curriculum leads to a Bachelor of Science degree in Education (with a major in Library Science) and certification as a school librarian, K-12. The program prepares teacher candidates for the expanding field of library science, which includes skills ranging from the development, organization, and administration of a multimedia collection to the use of computers in libraries and the retrieval of information from on-line systems. Library Science students are also able to obtain dual certification in Elementary Education. Additionally, the department offers a bachelor’s degree in library science which enables students to qualify for certification as a provisional public librarian in Pennsylvania. Instructional Technology — Providing an array of professional courses to the University community, the Department of Instructional Technology is a significant contributor to the professional growth of new and established educators. The department provides undergraduate students with required and elective courses in instructional technology. Additionally, a graduate program with state certification in instructional technology is available. English as a Second Language (ESL) — Kutztown University has been approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education to be a provider for the Program Specialist Certificate – English as a Second Language (ESL). Program requirements include 12 credits of class work in the following courses: ENG 334: Introduction to English Linguistics – 3 s.h. EDU/MLS 433: Cultural Awareness/Sensitivity for ESL/ELL Program Specialists – 3 s.h. EDU/MLS 434: Instructional Methods, Materials, and Assessments for ELL/ESL Populations – 3 s.h. EDU/MLS 435: English Language Acquisition and Awareness for ELL/ESL Populations – 3 s.h. Students must have a valid PA Instructional I or II Certificate to complete the program. All courses must be passed with a grade of C or higher. A 15-hour fieldwork experience must be completed. COLLEGE OF LIBERAL ARTS AND SCIENCES Studies in the Liberal Arts and Sciences are designed to enhance a student’s knowledge in many fields of learning and to prepare a student for a career upon graduation or for admission to graduate or professional school. Twenty plus programs lead to the Bachelor of Arts degree and forty plus lead to the Bachelor of Science degree. All programs provide for general education in the Humanities, the Social Sciences, the Natural Sciences and Mathematics, as well as for specialized study in the major discipline. COLLEGE OF VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS The College of Visual and Performing Arts provides opportunity for study and career preparation in the visual arts, music, and communication studies. There are two programs leading to a Bachelor of Arts degree (music, and communication studies), three programs leading to a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree (communication design, crafts, and studio art) and two programs leading to a Bachelor of Science degree (art education, music education) designed for the preparation of art and music teachers. A minor program consists of a minimum of 18 semester hours of study. In order to receive transcript recognition of a minor program, students must complete half of the minor course work at KU AND must earn a minimum G.P.A. of 2.00 in their minor course work.
