CIVIL SERVICE EMPLOYEES COUNCIL August 6, 2009 Capitol Rooms University Union Minutes I. Roll Call: Present: Sandy Blue, Suzanne Boussaard, Chris Brown, Jim Buffalo, Laura Caldwell, Carla Farniok, Richard Hamilton, Tishly Herrington, Ed Lavin, Dan Rathjen, Kim Sedgwick, Jamie Shuda, Excused: Pam Bowman, Hilary Churchill, Amber Dodds, Sheila Kirby, Bill Rupert, Jackie Thompson, Martha Youngmeyer II. Guest: Sarah Johnson, American Red Cross. In conjunction with CSEC’s upcoming Blood Drive on August 24 and 25 in the Union Heritage Room, Sarah spoke to the Council regarding the need for blood. She also shared with the Council how she became involved with the ARC as a result of her diagnosis of leukemia and her need for a bone marrow transplant. III. Minutes (Suzanne Boussaard) Minutes for the May, June and July meetings were officially approved. May’s minutes were approved by a motion from Rich Hamilton and seconded by Jamie Shuda. Jamie Shuda made a motion to approve June’s minutes and seconded by Laura Caldwell. Motion was made by Jamie Shuda and seconded by Jim Buffalo to approve the August minutes. All motions passed. IV. Treasurer’s Report (Jim Buffalo) Endowment Fund balance is $99,632.07. Scholarship Account balance is $10,614.36. The General Operating Account balance is $3,768.40. Jim Buffalo made a motion to transfer $2,367.93 from the Scholarship Account to the Endowment Fund which would make the new Endowment Fund balance of $102,000. After a second to the motion by Rich Hamilton and discussion, the motion passed. V. President’s Report (Ed Lavin) President Ed reported the state has a budget and the University has received the highest operating budget ever. Capital funding will make it possible for the Performing Arts Center and Quad Cities campus development a reality. There is no word as yet regarding raises. nd Ed provided a brief update on the golf outing scheduled for August 22 . It is not too late to register. Proceeds will benefit the CSEC scholarship fund. Ed also read two thank you cards sent to the Council. One was from Carol Watts and one from Pam Bowman. VI. Civil Service Employee of the Month (Laura Caldwell) Teresa Little, Staff Clerk in the Advancement and Public Services Office, is the August Employee of the Month. Her presentation will be on August 11th at 9:00 in Sherman 303. Remember to encourage individuals to nominate civil service employees. WIU Quad Cities Campus Report (Chris Brown) Chris reported on the following activities at the Quad Cities: New Director of Engineering has been hired. Renovating the Caxton Building for classes & offices - Lois Retherford will be office & student support and the ribbon cutting ceremony – August 19. Received money for beginning phases of Riverfront. Waiting for the funds to be released. Already beginning work so that construction can begin immediately. Very busy summer for students. Have held OPEN HOUSE and that was well attended. Microsoft Office Trainings – one held Aug. 4 morning & pm another scheduled for Aug 18. Faculty & Staff Appreciation day was held at Modern Woodman Park River Bandits game in July – over 35 faculty, staff and their families attended. All computers on the QC campus have been or are scheduled to be scanned for sensitive information. New Student orientation is next week. th Student Block Party is scheduled on Sept. 11 to coincide with an Alumni event here on campus. X. Representative Reports to Council 1. Affirmative Action Internship (Tishly Herrington) – No Report 2. Accreditation Committee (Martha Youngmeyer) – No Report 3. Women’s Center (Martha Youngmeyer) – The Women’s Center has moved into the new Multicultural Center and received most of its new furniture, and staff and volunteers are continuing the process of getting everything unpacked and organized. Resource Library books and A/V materials have been shelved, and they're available to be checked-out. Their annual Open House is being coordinated with the Gwendolyn Brooks and Casa Latina Cultural Centers and will be held on Friday, August 28 from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m., and the official Grand Opening and Ceremonial Ribbon Cutting is scheduled for the Friday of Homecoming Weekend, October 16, at 3 p.m. Two new graduate assistants, Matt Nelson and Kamala Buddhi, will begin August 10 and at the beginning of the semester, respectively. Also, a couple of student assistants will be returning this fall. Planning committee meetings will begin in early September for the annual Take Back the Night event which will be held on Thursday, October 8, and National Love Your Body Day, on Wednesday, October 21. The Women's Center has many books and resources that tie in with the 2009-10 University Theme of "Dollars and Sense: From Personal Finance to World Poverty," and we are planning a series of programs and newsletter articles on women and finance to be provided throughout the year. We also will be working with the American Association of University Women (AAUW) to provide $tart$mart workshops to teach junior and senior college women how to benchmark the salary of the job they want when they graduate and learn basic salary negotiation skills. This 2 1/2 hour, nuts-and-bolts workshop has been designed and piloted by WAGE on more than 60 campuses throughout America. Now, drawing on active engagement of AAUW members, AAUW and WAGE are collaborating to bring these workshops to 500 campuses within the next three years, and WIU, through the Women's Center, has been selected as one of those campuses to bring this program to our students. Dan made the suggestion the Council look at conducting a meeting in the new Multi-Cultural Center and request a tour of the new facility. 3. Constitution / Election (Jim Buffalo) – Discussion took place regarding the proposed language for CSEC actions regarding donations. Salary (Suzanne Boussaard) – No Report Social Events & Development (Jamie Shuda) – Jamie reported the luncheon is scheduled for October 23 and the rain date will be October 29 in the Grand Ballroom. Jamie also reported on a few tentative price quotes for the Employee of the Year Reception to be held December 4 in the Prairie Lounge. Committee on Committees (Richard Hamilton) – No Report XII. New Business: 1. Council of Councils: Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville will host this year’s state wide civil service council meeting on Friday, October 23. If Council members are interested in attending, they should let Ed know as soon as possible. 2. Flower Bulb Sales: The Council has decided to sell flower bulbs again this fall. This was a big success two years ago and provides Council with outstanding profits. All CSEC employees were handed brochures and order blanks.
