Toolbars and Tabs in SMART Notebook™ Software
1. Menu Toolbar

Menu Toolbar
Contains all the commands that can be used to manage files and objects in SMART Notebook file.
1. Select the menu option
2. Choose desired action
Adaptive Toolbar
This toolbar can be moved to the bottom of the page by clicking on the double-ended arrow which is located on
the far right of the toolbar.
Actions Panel
Browse, create and edit a .notebook file
Actions with an arrow
Full Screen Toolbar
in the bottom right corner contain additional actions or options
1. Select View Screens
Full Screen Toolbar – will open when the Full Screen option has been selected through the View Screens
button. All open windows are hidden and the current window will expand to fill the screen
2. Choose Full Screen
3. To Exit Full Screen, click on the Full Screen

1. Move forward and back between pages

Properties Toolbar
When buttons from the Tools panel is selected additional buttons appear through Properties Toolbar, providing
creative options and other properties for the selected tool.

Tools Panel
These buttons are for creating and working with basic objects on the page area.
1. Select

1. Select
Returns to select (mouse) mode.
Note: If select is not chosen, the SMART Board and SMART Notebook software continue to interact and interpret
touches based on last action/function
2. Create Shapes
1. Press on the Shapes icon
2. Choose a shape or object from the Properties panel
3. Choose a line and fill colour for the shape, object or line
4. Choose a line style and thickness for the line
5. Select the transparency for the object
3. Create Regular Polygons
1. Press on the Regular Polygon icon
2. Choose a polygon from the Properties panel
3. Choose a line and fill colour for the shape, object or line
4. Choose a line style and thickness for the line
5. Select the transparency for the object
4. Fill
1. Select an object or area to be filled
2. Select the fill icon
3. Choose a colour
4. Press the object – it is now filled.
5. Pens
1. Launch the Pens Toolbar
2. Choose from the different pen options available
Pen Options
Standard – write or draw digital ink in a variety of colours and line styles
Calligraphic – write or draw digital ink, like you do with the Standard pen type, but with lines of
varying thickness.
Note: Only available when connected to the SMART Board
Crayon – write or draw crayon-like digital ink
Highlighter – highlight text and other objects
Creative – Add colourful additions to the digital pen strokes
Magic – use the Magic Pen to:
 write in disappearing ink
 spotlight an area by drawing a circle around the area to spotlight
 magnify an area of the page by drawing a rectangle around it
Shape Recognition – draw shapes and the shape will be identified
Note: Do not lift the pen off the board when drawing the shape, it will not be recognised

3. Choose one of the default line styles
4. Select a colour for the digital ink

1. Press on the Text icon
2. Choose from the displayed default font styles or choose a font from the font drop-down menu
3. Select from the following options

4. Choose a font colour
5. Select the transparency for the text
7. Create Lines and Arcs
1. Press on the Lines
icon
2. Choose the type of line or arc required
3. Select a colour for the line or arc
4. Choose from the following line styles:
 Thickness
 Line style
 Line start option
 Line end option
5. Select the transparency for the line or arc
8. Eraser
1. Press the eraser icon
2. Choose from the three eraser sizes to clear the area
Note: The middle size will be the default when the eraser function is selected
3. Wipe the area clear
Tip: When you want to clear a larger section of the page area, draw a circle around the area with the eraser, then
tap once with the eraser inside the circle. All the digital ink inside the circle will disappear.
Note: if using the 800 series SMART Board which uses Touch Recognition, using the edge of your wrist in a
circular motion will also erase the digital ink

1. Page Sorter Tab
Use the page sorter to do the following:
When you want to…
Then…
Display a page
 Press the Page Sorter tab
 Select the thumbnail of the desired page to display
Display the next page
There are two ways the next page can be displayed.
Option 1
 Press Next Page
Option 2
 Swipe across the page from left to right
Note: Option 2 is only available on the 800 series board
Display the previous
page
Result: A message will appear indicating the current page number

Type the new page name
Press anywhere on the file to save

Choose the desired page thumbnail of the page to be moved
Drag the page thumbnail to the new position
Release the page thumbnail
Press the Page Sorter
tab
Select the object/s to be moved
Drag the object/s to desired page via the thumbnails of the Page Sorter tab
Press the Page Sorter
tab
Select the object/s to be copied




Press the object menu arrow
Choose Clone
Drag the cloned object to the desired page via the thumbnails of the Page
Sorter tab
Press the Page Sorter
tab


Press the top groups menu arrow
Select Edit Pages
Result: All pages in the .notebook file will appear
Attach pages to a
group
Rearrange the order of
the groups
Delete a group but
keep the pages
Delete a group and all
its pages

Press Add New Group button in the top right corner
Type a group name
Select the page to be grouped
Drag it to the right of the thumbnail the page is to follow



Press the groups blue bar
Drag it below the blue bar of the group it is to follow
Move all the pages to a different group.
Note: When there are no pages appearing in a group, SMART Notebook software
will delete the group automatically
 Press the blue bar’s menu arrow
 Select Delete Group

2. Gallery Tab
Use the Gallery Tab to do the following:

Open the Gallery
 Press the Gallery tab

 Press the category plus + sign to view the subcategories
 Select the category or subcategory to view the contents of the Gallery
Search the Gallery
 Press the Gallery tab

 Enter a keyword into the Type search terms here field
 Press Search
Add a Gallery item to a  Press the Gallery tab

 Browse for the Gallery item to be added
 Double-click the selected Gallery item’s thumbnail

Note:
a) If adding a picture, Adobe Flash compatible file, video or sound file, it will
appear on the opened page
b) If adding a background, it will replace the existing background
c) If adding a .notebook file, SMART Notebook software will insert the page(s)
before the current page
To add and Object to the Gallery:
 Press the Gallery tab

 Select desired object to be added to the Gallery
 Drag the object to My Content Category in Gallery
To add a Page to the Gallery:
 Press the Gallery tab
icon
 Select File > Export Page as Gallery Item
 Browse to where the page is to be saved
 Name the page and Save
 Select My Content
 Press the Menu Arrow for My Content
 Choose Add to My Content
To add a Supported File to the Gallery
 Press the Gallery tab
icon
 Select My Content
 Press the Menu Arrow for My Content
 Choose Add to My Content
 Browse for the Gallery item to be added
 Press Open
To Import a collection from another source subcategory:
 Press the Gallery tab
icon
 Select My Content
 Press the Menu Arrow for My Content
 Browse and select the Gallery item to be imported
 Press Open
To Export a collection:
 Select the category with the items to be exported
 Press the Menu Arrow
 Select Export as Collection File
 Browse to the folder where the file is to be saved
 Type a name for the file
 Save

Use the Gallery Tab to do the following:
Organising content in
To Create a subcategory:

 Select New Folder
 Type the name for the subcategory
 Press Enter
To Rename a subcategory:
 Press the Gallery tab

 Select My Content
 Press the Menu Arrow for My Content
 Select Rename
 Type in the new name
 Press Enter
To Move an item in the Gallery to an alternative subcategory:
 Press the Gallery tab

 Select desired object to be moved
 Drag the object to another subcategory in Gallery

Use the Attachments Tab to do the following:

 Press the Attachment Tab
 Press Insert at the bottom of the tab
 Select Insert Copy of File
 Browse to the file that is to be attached
 Press Open
Attach a shortcut to a

 Browse to the file that is to be attached
 Press Open
Attach a link to a web

 Type name for the link

4. Properties Tab
The Properties function works in the same principle as Microsoft Word.
To use the Properties tab:
 Press the Properties tab

 Create desired changes to objects, text, font etc
Depending on the object selected, the following can be changed:
 Colour, thickness and type of line to use
 The transparency of the filled area of objects
 Font size and type
 Object animation
5. Add-ons Tab
1. Press the Add-on Tab
icon
2. Select an object to be the activity object
3. Press Edit
4. From the Objects tab drag the objects to the appropriate areas to accept or reject them for the activity
5. From the Settings tab, choose the behaviour of the objects when accepted or rejected
6. Press Done
Changing the Background of the Page Area
1. Right –click on the page background
2. Press “Set Background”
3. Choose from the background fill settings
