KUisnowinyear4incarrying-outits5-yearaccreditationplan
withtheAACSBfortheB.S.inBusinessAdministrationandM.B.A.
programs.WearebusyproducinganextensiveSelf-EvaluationReport
thatisduetotheAACSBbySeptember1,2014.Assumingthatthe
reportisacceptablethenwewillhostapeerreviewteamvisitsometime
ineitherFebruaryorMarch2015.Thepeerreviewteamwouldmakea
recommendationoninitialaccreditationtotheAACSB.
IntheDepartmentofBusinessAdministration(DBA)effortsareon-
goingtohiretwotenuretrackfacultymembersinaccountingandonein
managementtojointhefacultyinfall2014.Successinrecruitingand
hiringareessentialinmaintainingmomentumtowardearningAACSB
accreditation.Outcomesassessmentsandimprovementinstudentlearningisalsocriticalingaining
accreditationandthefacultymembersinvolvedaretobecommendedfortheprogressmadeunder
ourAccreditationPlan.OnOctober13,14and15wehostedamockpeerreview

ofKentucky.Thepurposeofthemockteamvisitwas
togivestudents,facultyandadministrationexperienceinrespondingtoquestionsthatanAACSBpeer
reviewteamcouldask.Attheendoftheirvisit,they
wereoptimisticonKU’sinitiativetoearninitial
accreditationfromtheAACSB.Theyalsoprovidedus
withadviceonhowtostrengthenourcasefor
accreditation.
Meanwhile,theDepartmentofSportManagement
andLeadershipStudies(DSMLS)isnowof icially
movingforwardtoearnaccreditationfromthe
CommissiononSportManagementAccreditation
(COSMA)fortheB.S.inLeisureandSportStudies
program.TheDepartmenthasgrownsigni icantlyin
thelastfewyearshavingnowreachedabout500
undergraduatemajorsupfromlessthanahundred3
or4yearsago.

Exciting First Step Toward
COSMA Accreditation
TheDepartmentofSportManagementandLeadershipStudiesis
pursingtheNationalSportManagementaccreditationwhichis
calledCOSMA(CommissiononSportManagementAccreditation).
COSMAisaspecializedaccreditingbodythatpromotesand
recognizesexcellenceinsportmanagementeducationincolleges
anduniversitiesattheundergraduateandgraduatelevels.The
purposeofCOSMAistopromoteandrecognizeexcellenceinsport
managementeducationthroughspecializedaccreditation.
OnSeptember25,2013theCommissiondeterminedthat
KutztownUniversityadequatelyprovidedtheinformation
neededtobegrantedCandidacyStatus.Thisisanimportant irst
steptowardfullaccreditation.Nextthedepartmentwillpreparea
comprehensiveselfstudy,andundergoasitevisitconductedbya
professionalteamofpeerreviewersfromtheCOSMAmembership.
CandidacyStatushelpsthedepartmentdevelopaclearunderstandingoftheaccreditationprocess.TheSelf-StudyCommitteeis
beingledbyDr.YongjaeKimandateamofcolleaguesincluding,
Dr.FredGarman,Dr.SoojinKim,Dr.KerriCebula,Dr.Dina
Hayduk,Dr.ChristineLottesandDr.LorriEngstrom.
TheDepartmentofSportManagementhasbeenworkingtoward
achievingcandidacystatusfor iveyears.Thishonoristheresultof
thehardworkanddedicationoftheoutstandingSport
ManagementfacultywithspecialthankstoDr.Kimforhis
leadershipandcommitmentguidingtheaccreditationprocess.The
goalofthedepartmentistoachievefullaccreditationbyFallof
2015.
OnOctober26ththeDepartmentofSportManagementand
LeadershipStudieshostedatailgatingboothduring
FanfestatHomecoming.TheTentwas illedwithgoodfood,
lotsofgive-a-ways,musicandgames.Studentsfromthemajor
workedtheboothtogreetAlumniandtalkabouttheLeisure
andSportStudiesmajor.Studentsinthemajorcompetedinthe
footballgameaswellastheCrossCountryChampionshipmeet.

“IknewIwantedtostudyabroadassoonasIdeclaredaminorin
Spanish.The irstsemesterthataSpanishclasswasn'tinmy
scheduleIrealizedthatstudyingthelanguagemeantmoretome
thanjust illinggeneraleducationrequirements.Studyingabroadis
justthenextstepformetolearnSpanishwellenoughtoapplyitina
futurecareer.Ihadseenmanyofmyfriendsstudyabroad,andmy
highschoolteacherspentayearinBarcelonawhenshewasin
college.Withthesupportofthemaswellastherestofmyfriends
andfamily,itwashardtosaynotolivinginSpainforthreemonths!
TheUniversityofSevillahasover80,000students...alittlebitmore
thanKutztown!SevillaisthethirdlargestcityinSpain,andhasa
verymetropolitanlifestyle.Ilivewithahostmotherandanother
studyabroadstudent,andattendclasseswithallinternational
students.AllofmyclassesaretaughtinSpanishandgorighttowards
myminor,butIknowplentyofpeopleinmyprogramthattake
classestaughtinEnglish.
Ilovethewaydaysarespent
hereinSouthernSpain.
Everyonedoesalotof
walking,IthinkIprobably
averageabout3milesaday,
andeveryonestill
participatesinthetradition
al'siesta'time,andbetween
thehoursof1to4most
shopsareclosedandpeople
areontheirlunchbreakand
takinganap.I'mafanofall
oftheSpanishfoodI'vetried,
frompaellatotortillatothe
manymealsmadewith
chickpeasorpotatoes.Some
ofmyfavoritethingstoeat
outarepapasbravas(potato
