National Coming Out Day A daylong event featuring interactive workshops, activities, and displays aimed at understanding and celebrating the “coming out” process of LGBT individuals. National Coming Out Day is held annually to celebrate and affirm LGBT individuals who have “come out.” This is a student led Allies program. Wednesday, October 14 Spirit Day Old Main Concourse A time of remembrance for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth who have lost their lives due to bullying. The color purple in the rainbow flag stands for spirit, so take a stand against bullying and support lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth by wearing purple. Transgender Day of Remembrance (Allies) A day to remember individuals killed and bullied due to anti-transgender prejudice and violence. This is a student lead Allies program. HIV and AIDS is a global health issue that affects individuals on every continent, and of every gender, race, sexual orientation and economic class. World AIDS Day began in 1988 as a worldwide awareness effort to unite people in the fight against HIV and AIDS, support those affected by HIV and AIDS, and remember those who have lost their individual fight against this devastating disease. The event is full of fun activities and games that help increase awareness about discrimination and diversity. The event also provides students from all types of communities a safe space free of gender stereotypes and heteronormative behavior constructs. Food and snacks are provided. Monday, March 14 through Diversity Awareness Week Mark your calendars for a week of diversity and inclusion awareness. The Diversity Friday, March 18 McFarland Student Union 250 President’s Room Awareness Week will feature student organizations and groups focusing on various topics of diversity each day of the week. Topics will include LGBTQ issues, women’s and gender issues, multicultural topics, religion and faith, disabilities, and so much more! The week will end with a presentation and discussion on intersectionality and how all diverse communities are connected to one another.
