Project Title: Design a bathroom cubicle for the developing countries, containing a toilet or squatting pan, as well as the most adequate solution for waste and water handling Introduction: (Explain the framework of the project and the problem to be solved) A lot of people in developing coutries don’t have access to proper sanitation services. Fresh water pipelines and sewage systems don’t always reach city slums or rural areas. People living in those areas end up using poorly built pit latrines and even open defecation. Those habits result in poor quality of life, contamination of the environment and ultimately, infections spreading over. On the other hand, poor hygiene habits, like unfrequent hand washing after using toilet, are a source of infections, too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fdwvuTrycYU http://vimeo.com/34792993 http://www.gatesfoundation.org/infographics/Pages/reinvent-the-toilet-info.aspx Project Brief: Design a bathroom cubicle for the developing countries, containing a toilet or squatting pan, as well as the most adequate solution for waste and water handling. To explore the environment/needs of people in the areas described in the introduction. Identify differences (related to sanitation and use of toilet) among them. To define the functions and features that the cubicle must have, including at least: - Waste capture (solid, liquids) by a toilet or squatting pan, allowing safe and hygienic interface with the user - Waste storage or transport. Providing an adequate barrier of odours, bacteria and insects moving into the cubicle - An efficient cleaning system to keep the unit clean after every use To design a WC cubicle as a whole unit where walls, floor and roof integrate the previous functions and features. The use of water if any, must be reduced to a minimum, and preferably to be recycled for further uses. The use of chemicals or refills should be avoided to minimise the cost per use. The project scope will include the choice of the most adequate materials and manufacturing processes as well as maintenance services that would ideally allow the local communities to create their own start-up’s (i.e.: the utilization of high-level technologies or materials that are not available in the area of study, is not desirable) Company Name: ROCA SANITARIO, S.A.
