Powell will give a presentation on his newest book, Out of Poverty: Sweatshops in the Global Economy. The event will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 29th at Patterson Library, located at 1836 Parkway Drive. The event will be co-hosted by the Texas Tech chapter of Young Americans for Liberty. Powell is Director of The Free Market Institute at Texas Tech, which was founded in order to facilitate the teaching and researching of the virtues of free market economics. The FMI also engages in external outreach to the public and communities outside of Texas Tech. In addition to his role as FMI Director, Powell is the North American Editor of the Review of Austrian Economics, and his research findings have been reported in the Wall Street Journal and New York Times. He is also a regular contributor to Fox Business’ Freedom Watch, Stossel, and The Independents. In his newest book Out of Poverty, Powell uses economic theory in arguing that much of what the anti-sweatshop movement has agitated for would actually harm the very workers they intend to help by creating less desirable alternatives and undermining the process of development. On Saturday, Powell will give a presentation about his findings in Out of Poverty, and will take questions from the audience. Lubbock Liberty organizer, Brian Thornton said, “we are thrilled to have such a distinguished guest speaking to the power of the free market in improving lives around the world.” ### For more information or to schedule an interview with Brian Thornton, please call (806) 787-8339 or e-mail at brian.thornton@ttu.edu.
