This class aims to improve students’ writing skills and also serves as an introduction to the English major or to any college-level study of the Humanities. This course also fulfills the Humanities requirement for Texas Tech University’s Core Curriculum. Through our reading, thinking, discussing, and writing in this section of English 2391, we will focus on key questions about the liberal arts, humanities, literature, and language. We will consider professional issues and contexts in higher education. We will review and discuss specific issues in literature and language. We will talk about career planning and life-long learning. An emphasis will be placed on active learning, critical thinking, and effective communication as we focus on improving our writing. Students will be expected to complete reading and writing assignments each week; access materials online through the library and through web links on Blackboard; take one language test and one literature test; and participate in interactive discussions. This is an online course, so students will need reliable internet access, and students’ computers must be configured to use the university’s official online learning platform, Blackboard. (Guides are available at www.Blackboard.ttu.edu, and personal assistance is available through IT Help Central.) Students must also obtain and be able to use Skype (a free program) to communicate with their professor; depending on the computer being used, a student may need to have an external microphone with a headset in order to use Skype. This course will be offered over the long summer term, a ten-week period that runs from the beginning of Summer I to the end of Summer II. Anyone is welcome to enroll in English 2391 who meets the basic prerequisites for a sophomore English class. This is an excellent class for students of all majors and for University Studies or General Studies students as well as for teacher certification students and for English majors and minors of all kinds (that is, literature and language, linguistics, creative writing, and/or technical communication students). For more information about the class, please contact Dr. Hurst at maryjane.hurst@ttu.edu. Before the summer term begins, Dr. Hurst will e-mail enrolled students with welcome messages explaining how to get ready for and how to begin this class. 34828 Introduction to Critical Writing CourseSubtitle W 6-8:50PM Mary Jane Hurst maryjane.hurst@ttu.edu English/Philosophy 485 when in town Courses not offered this semester.
